Got a 09 335i which has a ticking noise on start up, gets quieter once engine is up to temperature but is still there. Anyone have any ideas ? I am thinking injectors but could be completely wrong. Have heard the noise on youtube from some other owners and comments seem to think it normal but it just sounds too loud for me. Am I just being another paranoid 335i owner. Had water pimp replaced bang on 50k

FWIW, prior to my injectors being replaced there wasn't a ticking noise. It was more to do with the car running rough on start.
Maybe link to the posts on YT you are referring to??

If it ticks when the engine is cold, it's normal. On mine it seems to get louder once the idle settles down. If the ticking persists even when the engine is up to full operating temperature, it isn't normal. When the engine is hot, the only ticking you should hear is the sound from the injectors. I'd hazard a guess and say that the majority of N54 engines do it - but as I say, if you open the bonnet after a half hour drive and you still have a metallic clicking/clacking, then it's not quite right. With the bonnet up, 'listen' to the engine by placing the blade of a long handled screwdriver against the head (wherever you can access it) and put your ear to the handle. You shouldn't hear anything untoward.

I just sold my 2007 335i E92 with 165k miles. Purchased new and ticked from new. Most obvious at tickover (pun intended) and tended to go (or get masked) when the revs went up. Slight indication that it would be less prominent after an oil change suggesting tappets/lifters or similar. It did not go away when I had all 6 injectors replaced at around 70k miles.
It's a bit annoying and does make you think something hideous is about to happen but as you see I got good miles out of it and it used no oil to speak of even at 165k.
My new 435i does not tick at all (just plays bloody stupid engine noises through the stereo instead of having a proper exhaust)

Wastegate rattle, try youtube for 335i wastegate rattle and see if that's the same noise.

I've had mine adjusted previously, and it's doing it again.

Mine has had the injectors replaced along with the turbos and ticks just as much now as it did before.

It's an MY57 on 49k with an N54.

Wastegate rattle is heard on deceleration, usually as the revs fall through 3,000 rpm. It's a different sound.

Most likely hydraulic lifters. A common problem with the n series 6 pot engines. Usually nothing to worry about if the noise goes away once the engine has warmed up. just do a google search and there is loads of info on this.

Thanks for the replies, It is louder on start up and once up to temperature it is still there but not as loud. Definitley not wastegate rattle. Glad to hear other people with same noise, sounds like just one of these things on the N54 engine. Pulls like a train as well

Timing chain issue? No idea if the 335i is affected like the diesel engines but could be an issue?

I'm going to guess at it being injectors.

The N54 is a very rattley/ticky engine when it's cold and idling.

Well car didn't go to garage today as wife was unwell so will have to wait to later to find out.

I know the N54 is a rattly engine when cold but once warmed up should it still be " ticking " ?
