Hi there

My car has developed a ticking noise at idle, which is louder when the engine is warm. Car has done 28000miles. Not sure if this is normal!

I have attached a link to the video

Are you on about the roughly once per second hiss noise?

Yes, it sounds to me like a metallic ticking noise, and I reckon its getting louder.

It's possibly something belt driven, or maybe even a slip of rubber coming away from the belt.
It's a lot slower than the engine rotation, so I'd think it was something external.

sounds like the n47 timing chain sadly. rev it to 1500 and it will sound worse if its the chain

Try taking it to BMW, there was a recall for the guides, the noise could be a bad section of the chain rubbing on a guide, but I think 2012 is past the point where BMW believe they fixed the problem, so they might not want to do it under "goodwill"

Hmm, the consensus does seem to be that something's not quite right. It was taken into a BMW dealer to be looked at, unfortunately I had other commitments so a family member had to take it in. And apparently the mechanic came out had a quick listen and said it all sounded normal. Although I'm not convinced!

Right quick update, Took the car in to an independent who agreed the noise wasn't normal, although they did not think it was timing chain related. A drive belt was changed although unfortunately the noise persists.

Agree with posters above, sounds belt driven. I'd be looking at the pulleys/getting them checked.

Did you find any solutions to the problem? I have 320d with the exact same problem
