Googledoc spreadsheet odd behaviour

I have a column on a googledoc spreadsheet where the data in some of the cells is inside apostrophes, eg. '894' . When leaving the cell, google is removing the first apostrophe but if I click back up to the editing bar above the sheet it re-appears until I leave the cell again. Any ideas why this is happening and how to stop it as it's messing up my formatting. Thanks.

The single quote mark means that "the rest of the text is a string".

I can't see a way to disable this so your options appear to be:

• Change to double quotes
• Use 2 single quotes at the beginning
