We all know if a part comes in a Porsche box it has an extra '0' on the end, if it also has Turbo, GT or RS on the box too then add a couple of extra '0's.
What is the most obscene cost for a part from the Porsche range?
I have just had a quote from Porsche for a new (exchange) 996 alternator of over £1000, I had mine reconditioned for £114. How can that huge increase in price be in any way justified?
If anyone needs a alternator or starter reconditioning, I can recommend Burghfield Starter and Alternator Centre near Reading, they turned around my Alternator within a day and it came back looking like new. No connection to me - but just a very pleased customer.

Brand new is not the same as reconditioned so you are not comparing like for like.

That's very wise advice - connecting the alternator to yourself is likely to lead to serious issues...Theres loads on the 996 that can be got much cheaper from the original manufacturers.
Suspension arms, Engine mounts, MAF sensor, coil packs etc etc
Usually the only things I go to the dealer for are fasteners and and bits of clips and trim etc.
Porsche will do you a recon alternator now too - but at much more than £114

Count yourself lucky that you are in the UK - I definately do. When living in Dubai I ground out and lost one of my GT3 brake cooling ducts. This is a circa £10 part in the UK I believe. Went to the only Porsche dealer in Dubai, and asked for a replacement as I was doing a mountain run that weekend and needed the part (otherwise I would have mail ordered it in). AED 600 (just over £100). I asked if they had got it wrong and there is an extra zero on the price. Nope.
The good thing about Dubai is that labour is cheap and as I knew them well enough and had warranty they fitted it for free. I suppose I would have been stung for 30mins labour in the UK so not so different total cost!

Consider it only costs a few thousand extra to make the most expensive 911 over the cheapest boxster, and then look at the asking prices!
On the flipside, Porsche has the best parts availability for older cars of any other manufacturer I know of. Try getting interior trim for a VW Corrado,

I'm struggling to find a link to the prices, but I recently rebuilt the steering rack on my 911 SC. It's a direct rack and pinion set up with two bearings on the pinion; one ball bearing at the bottom and one roller bearing at the top. Porsche wanted £180 for these two bearings. I got exactly the same bearings, manufactured by SKF, for £7 from a local supplier.

I recently bought a set of MAF sensors and was very tempted by the Bosch replacements but I was told by a very credible source that the Porsche ones only get into a Porsche box when they have been tested and met much finer tolerances, the Bosch ones could be rejected Porsche ones. I know this doesn't hold true for all Porsche parts but I do believe they pay more attention to their QC. Still fSuspension arms, Engine mounts, MAF sensor, coil packs etc etc

Not the quality per se but the calibration has been checked by Porsche to be where they specify, not all pass the inspection and go back to Bosch - my source is credible and wasn't trying to sell me anything and he's a German engineer who knows lots of engineers in Bosch and Porsche

Yup, totally understandable, but if you've got an expensive engine which relies on everything being 100% Porsche specs then it becomes something to think about. No-one wants to spend double the amount on a factory vs OEM supplier part but sometimes you've got to decide who your experts are and.......Many moons ago I used to work in a steel plant and we produced a type of galvanised steel for Porsche, the QA manuals were insanely detailed! Yes they do have very high standards, I've also done work more recently at a plant in Germany that makes curtain air-bag components and the strict Porsche QA is in force there, including cleanliness of plant.
Prices are still naughty though.... Bloody BMW isn't much better, I had a quote for £600 for a PAS pump!!! Got that rebuilt for £140...

Nose lift's pump for a 997 mk2 is about 10.000 Euros in the Continent, part only. And they fail often...
Porsche don't provide individual internal parts, so if you have troubles you have to go to the full new part o take a OEM refurbished, which cost about 70% of the new one. Completely obscene.
A friend of mine discovered this a week ago, was completely stunned. But it's a lucky boy, his mechanic opened the pump and discovered that there is a small broken belt inside, he look for a replacement in a belt specialist and ...voilà, lift working again. Replacement belt was 20 Euros, labour about 200.
Porsche don't provide individual internal parts, so if you have troubles you have to go to the full new part o take a OEM refurbished, which cost about 70% of the new one. Completely obscene.
