Windscreen repair and insurance renewal - sigh
Discussion
I don't think I'll be claiming for chip repair again...
I'm currently looking for insurance using a popular comparison site. I was first quoted £587.24. Then I remembered that we'd had a windscreen chip fixed on my gf's old car. Adding that to the quote, it's now £634.94.
So that repair (on a rubbish car since sold) has cost £25 (the excess) plus £47.70 = 72.70.
Should have got one of those kits off ebay...

Didn't know you had to declare windscreen chip repairs...!!
What exactly did you think it meant when they asked you "have you made an insurance claim in the last three years?" or whatever? To be fair OP, £70 isn't bad for fixing a windscreen. it would have been a LOT more if you'd had to pay for a replacement.

But isnt there normally a little help box which when clicked tells you to exclude windscreen repair and replacement ?To be fair OP, £70 isn't bad for fixing a windscreen. it would have been a LOT more if you'd had to pay for a replacement.

True, but since I'll have to declare it every year for the next 3-5 years, I suspect it's going to cost a lot more than that in the end! While I'm at it, are those ebay repair kits any use? Current car has two small chips too. It's the bloody M5 roadworks...

Unusual for a windscreen chip repair to change the premium. Did you do the two quotes a few days apart as if so that's quite likely to be why the prices changed. If not then I'm quite surprised.
Nope, quoted back to back. Some cursory googling suggests this is perfectly normal. Glass claims don't affect NCB but there's nothing to stop them loading your premium down the line.Had a conversation with dial direct along these lines, told them I would rather pay for it myself and not claim- they said well you still have to declare it as a loss now that you have notified us that you had a stone chip in the screen, and that this is a recorded telephone conversation.
I asked them if I should tell them about all the stone chips on my bonnet? Alloy wheel scratches etc that I will pay to get fixed myself - they reckoned these were all losses.
In the end I thanked them for helping me to decide which company I won't be renewing with.
Idiots.

This prompted me to look at my Direct Line fully comp insurance.
Excess is 75.00 for replace
10.00 for repair
It also states that a replacement will not affect NCD
It won't effect your no claims but they will increase your insurance as it's on file you claimed for a windscreen.Excess is 75.00 for replace
10.00 for repair
It also states that a replacement will not affect NCD

As above, NCD =/ premium. The promise of not affecting NCD is how they sucker you into a claim. They more than make their money back in subsequent premium hikes.Excess is 75.00 for replace
10.00 for repair

In future I think I'll only consider using my windscreen cover if it's properly broken. For chip repairs it'll be DIY or man with a van.

Great conspiracy theory. What happens if you insure with a different company every coming year. In future I think I'll only consider using my windscreen cover if it's properly broken. For chip repairs it'll be DIY or man with a van.
You don't need to declare windscreen repair claims either.
It's a great little story all round

On a standard car I've never paid more than £150 to have a new screen fitted, I've never claimed because they get more than that out of you plus it's all the hassle of remembering dates and costs when applying for insuranceIn future I think I'll only consider using my windscreen cover if it's properly broken. thats not through auto glass etc though, find a local independent and ask for a quote
