Help me haggle (Ovlov content)
Discussion
Well my £5k absolute top budget for our "occasional tip and family" car is blown as I "must" have the latest version V70.
This one seems nice but its leggy (but they can take it) http://www.deesidemotorcentre.co.uk/used-car-volvo...
Can you experienced hagglers give me some pointers for haggling an already reasonably priced car from a specialist that looks in good nick - or is the best achievable simply getting worn tyres done and thanking my lucky stars the engine management light is off.
I do realise I can say "can you do any better mate" but this being PH I await sage advice mixed with sarcasm and downright ridicule as were all powerfully built goatee wearing hipster directors are we not?

dont think theres any special tricks to getting a trader to knock alot off , if its hung around a while and they want rid they may be more willing to haggle than if its a dead cert seller
and yes have a really good look around for stuff like tyres that you can ask to have sorted , try and get them to agree to okay branded ones rather than the cheapest dregs

I'm the worst haggler in the world so can't help there but if the tyres are worn then do them yourself, the dealer will chuck on the cheapest thing they can find. Made that mistake before and should have just asked for £50 off instead, wouldn't have got it because of my poor haggling skills but at least I would have asked.
I have looked at 3 today, 2 had the engine service message up and the third wouldnt rev or kick down - I asked if it was in winter mode but the button near the gear stick (2003) wouldnt "press" it was either stuck in or its not a button - also the DSC or whatever far right suspension button didnt light up - thats when I decided I need to spend more.
Pull the engine cover off and check the linkage is still attached to the stepper motor on the left of the engine (half way between the front and the back of the engine. Also check for oil leaks around this area as the repair can be pricey. (Google D5 swirl flap arm)
Also try handbrake on, into D then straight to R and back to D. Listen for clunks and clicks which ultimately are inert but "could be" driveshaft wear or g/box mounts.
These cars are bombproof with the D5, so pay your money and enjoy!

Lovely car but the heated seats are not present but standard for the year - very odd, would they have been deleted ?

If you dont mind having the older generation P2 model, £6-7k would buy you an absolute minter, and in many Volvo fans eyes, its the superior car too.
I'd endorse this point. If you've already found yourself pushing the budget upwards, why not settle for something cheaper and, arguably, better. A colleague bought a reasonably leggy (130k miles) 2006 S80 D5 in a superb spec for £5k or so. Great service history, it had four matching premium tyres, Volvo OEM brake pads and was exceptionally clean inside and out.
It didn't look so great once we got VIDA on it, the gearbox was fked (£1500 for a rebuild and it's still not right), it had a myriad of EGR system faults and he needed the two rear calipers rebuilt. Even the best service and maintenance record doesn't mean the last guy didn't put off the big jobs until finally there were too many outstanding and he jumped ship.
I can't say I'd want to spunk £10k odd into a car with 130K on the clock. For all the "modern cars, starship mileage, XYZ" talk cars follow the bathtub model of failures and my personal experience of leggier cars totally bears this out. As suggested I'd be looking to spend less on a late model, low mileage, squeaky clean P2.
I also don't like buying cars from dealers anymore, I've had much more luck with honest cars from private sellers. They aren't so experienced at lying to your face and covering up faults, and you're not paying extra for their margin and worthless aftersales support.
P3 feels much more "modern" to drive with far lower NVH levels, and has a much nicer interior though...

Thats very lovely - dealer or private ? how come I didnt see it ;o)
It was a dealer. Depends how far your search parameters were set I suppose; it was about 150 miles south of you!If you want a billy bargain and do normal sort of miles the 2.5T version of the P3 (2007 onwards) V70 is thoroughly unloved by the used market and works quite well. I think they were initially about 200bhp as standard but a Polestar map takes them to 250bhp odd. The 3.2 I6 is rare but also usually cheap too.
A 2.5T with the manual gearbox is likely the most robust model you can buy.

I was only searching for petrol autos. Mine's an Ocean Race edition, which I think came in a special colour - I really like it.
Was that for sale just over the bridge in Wales? In which case, I think I may hate you, as I wanted to buy it but was just beaten to it!This looks nice and has the 18inch wheels which normally mean its got the lower firmer suspension, so little bumpy and will rub the arch's but it looks nice is a manual with the spaceball gear stick, and they are more reliable then the auto.
Best part is its the later 2.4t5 with 260bhp.
