Hello. I have recently had the opportunity to test drive a 6 speed manual 4.7 Vantage coupe. I have a question about the transmission. When shifting from neutral to first gear the shifter felt pretty unrefined. Forgive my directness here, but it felt totally wrong? Slushy? Is this normal? From say first to second gear felt great. No issue. The car was warmed. I haven't had a chance to compare this to other cars. I don't know when or if the transmission fluid has ever been changed. The dealer is tracking down the service records. Please advise me. Thanks!

If it was warmed up, that would be wrong. Normal issue would be 1st to 2nd difficulty until gearbox warme up

Would my guess be correct?
You change gear with your right hand.

I have the same car and as Neil has said, something is wrong.

I've got the same car as well and never noticed a problem putting it in to first, even when cold.

Hello. Thank you for all the replies. Ok. I think we are misunderstanding what I am asking. So let me ask you does the shifter feel the same when shifting from neutral into first gear as it does from gear to gear? The car goes into gear no problem. I know that the shifter throw is less from gear to gear. I do shift with me right hand btw.

My clue was shifter.

Usually 1st gear would be engaged, from neutral, when the car is stationary. My gear lever then moves easily into 1st, with no resistance at all.

I presume that answers your question, because if selecting 1st when the car is moving, it would usually be going from 2nd to 1st. That for me is infrequent, but even then, the gearshift requires little effort.

As mentioned, when these cars are first driven (cold), there can be resistance going from 1st to 2nd on the first gear change. That is considered fairly normal, but it would seem that you have probably encountered a fault.

I think I will have to compare it to other cars. Unfortunately for me the car in question and all of the comparisons are 300km away. If the car I was considering wasn't my perfect specification, I would just forget about it. I guess I will be taking another drive.......

Yes, a comparison drive in another 4.7 manual, should confirm to you that a difficult shift into 1st is not right.

Pity about the long journey, but the good thing is, you discovered a possible fault before purchasing.
They are wonderful cars. Worth the effort.
