Hi all, I am due to take delivery of a new S3 Saloon later this month.
Does it matter what type of Super Unleaded that I use ?
Tesco & Esso are my nearest petrol stations and occasionally Shell.

I've never put anything pother than V-Power in, simply because that's my nearest station, but I think as long as you use super it shouldn't matter which supplier it comes from.

I tend to avoid supermarket petrol on any level (it's probably totally irrational, I know!) but really it's up to you.

Oh and enjoy the car (you've chosen the best looking variant wink )

The best regarded UK pump fuels are Tesco Momentum 99 and Shell V-Power, both 99 RON. Esso is only 97 if I'm not mistaken so if you're paying the extra you may as well have the best.

BP Ultimate is also 97 RON. Note that the stated RON is the minimum RON of the fuel. There's all sorts of debate about this - for example, if it's a quiet filling station, the fuel might have been sat in the reservoir for a long period.

Being turbocharged, I think you're more likely to feel and see a difference in the S3 based on the fuel you pick. You'll be able to tell what it's happiest on by the feel of the car - if it's more rough on certain fuels, if it pulls harder on others.

My wife has a 2015 8V S3 Cabriolet and she only uses super unleaded, mainly Tesco Momentum as that's the closest to us.

Is there generally much of a price saving by using Tesco super instead of Shell super? (I only ask as there is not a Tesco with a petrol station anywhere that I frequent, so wouldn't know)

I find that Tesco 99 tends to be a little cheaper than VPower. Also, just a personal preference, that the fleet (Q5 and Golf R) 'feel' better on Tesco than Shell, but that could just be me.

Tesco Momentum is tagged at 5p per litre dearer than Tesco normal unleaded and Shell VPower is around 8p per litre dearer than the normal Shell unleaded.

I must admit I can't tell the difference between Momentum and VPower but tend to use VPower as it's nearer to me.

I've been filling up with Sainsburys Superplus, same as tesco, 5p a litre more and 99 RON. Can't tell the difference between that and the tesco stuff. My car has a bit move shove from lower revs with the higher RON.

Thanks for your comments
I will most likely use V-Power where possible, if stuck will use Tesco Momentum.

Current car is a 2010 A3 Sportback 1.8TFSI I usually fill with regular unleaded, have tried a few tanks of V-Power from time to time
but not noticed any difference in performance or MPG, may be more noticeable on the S3.

S3 Saloon - must say from seeing the first pictures at launch of the A3 saloon that it looks much nicer than the Sportback and I can manage okay
without the hatch. Should collect next week.
Colour Sepang Blue, Manual.

Definitely use 99.
Tesco or shell.
I had no issues finding 99 octane in most places.

If not then I'd put in the minimum fuel to get me back to a known station.

S3 will really appreciate the better fuel.
Hope you whack a tuning box on it or a Revo map.
Come alive with those.

Thanks for the notes on price differences.

OP - good choice on Sepang Blue and even more kudos for going manual. Initially I second-guessed my choice of manual over DSG, but haven driven a new DSG RS3, I am very happy with my choice.

Time for a self-indulgent shot of my car. I'm genuinely pleased with this car - still after 7 months of ownership. And that's not like me at all! I'm normally thinking, "What do I fancy next" by now. Not saying I'm not thinking that - it's just that for the first time ever, with the same budget available there is nothing else I would rather have.
