Hi folks

I'm not a regular Poster in the Volvo section but I took delivery of a V 60 a couple of weeks ago and am so impressed with it I thought I would add my initial thoughts here in case it is useful for anyone.

I've had a few Volvos over the last decade so I am fairly committed to the Marque - our previous family car was an XC 90 and before that we had a V 70 both with seven seats. But as the kids have grown up and moved on we decided to opt for something smaller as a replacement and I thought that the v60 probably fitted the bill.

I knew nothing about these cars and didn't bother to go for a test drive because I'm too lazy so I just read up the reviews which seemed okay and decided on the new D4 engine for the best compromise between performance and economy. I then picked one I liked the look of online, phoned the dealer and struck a deal on the phone for delivery a week later and crossed my fingers that it would be a decent car.

Anyway I have to say I'm absolutely amazed by this car so far.

Obviously it drives and handles better than the XC 90 simply because it is lighter and lower so I was expecting that.

But this new D4 diesel engine combined with the eight speed auto box has really astonished me.

It accelerates really well and is quite quiet for a diesel but the fuel economy is amazing - I can't really comprehend how they can get such good economy from a 2 L four-cylinder diesel engine in a largeish car that accelerates to 60 in under eight seconds!

I haven't done a detailed mpg calculation but it looks like I'm getting between 750 and 800 miles to a tank full which is not far off double what I was getting out of the XC 90.

And they also get amazing emissions figures out of this engine so the annual road tax is only £30. I think my XC 90 road tax was nearly 500 quid so I'll be able to tax the new V 60 for 15 years for the price of one year in the XC 90.

Anyway I'm not knocking the XC 90 it did me well for 8 years with very little trouble or cost and was a great way for transporting all the kids and their friends.

But if anybody is looking for a sports wagon size estate don't dismiss the V 60 and if you want good fuel economy combined with performance I highly recommend the new D4 engine.

Thanks for that review.
I'm looking at getting a three year old V60 Auto in the next month or so to use instead of my Astravan for work and commuting as my knees are now protesting at driving a manual!
How long has the "New" D4 engine been in use and if not very long would anyone have any recommendations on the best engine to go for if one is not within my range?
Hopefully looking at an SE Lux with Nav, never had a Volvo myself but last year got my Brother-in-law an XC60 and was very impressed during the week that I had it prior to delivery.

That diesel motor is 2015 onwards. I bought a 1.6 Business Edition earlier this year. I fancied built-in sat nav and would have liked the SE Lux goodies, but on my budget the newer low mileage BE version was a better buy. Mine's a manual 6 speeder (no problems at all). I think all Volvo V60 auto boxes were Citroen until this year, which may or may not be a concern to you. Diesel engine choices pre-2015 are I believe: 1.6 litre Peugeot/Ford, 2.0 litre Peugeot/Ford or the 5 cylinder Volvo unit of 2.4 litres. All are good motors. Like most things, bigger is better but dearer to run. I'm very happy with my 1.6 though (being a cheapskate tight-ars*, lovin' the £20/year RFL).

On the subject of the different diesels, I found my 1.6d V60 was no more economical than the old D5 S60 I had. I assume due to the fact you could/had to drive it flat out everywhere

Just thinking of doing a thread on this engine

I pick up a XC60 D4 auto SE Lux Nav on the 9th. I picked this over the D5 for the 8 speed and plus it was more refined than the D5.

I do mostly motorway 68 miles combined in 320D and i see 46 MPG so will and should see a saving in fuel used over the week.
