I'm having exactly the same issue as in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3B_L3CvZBY

Does anyone know what causes it?

The car has had various work done recently including replacing some of the oil feed lines and the high pressure fuel pump. It has enough oil/coolant and all the spark plugs are seated - not sure what else I can check without a code reader!

Thanks

Have you tried using both keys? Just in case one is not decoding correctly for the imobiliser.

I just tried with the second key. Got the same result - uploaded a video here

I tried a few times and at no point did the car actually start frown

I would look at high pressure fuel pump , poor starting and poor running when cold , very common problem on the S .

Seen this mentioned in several places. It's going to a garage tomorrow - any idea on price for the HPFP?

Again I have seen this mentioned in several places during my research. What's involved? I've yet to find an explanation, cost estimate or idea of if it actually works.

Cheers

Mini n14 engine is a direct injection motor, and like all DI engines there is no fuel passing over the inlet valves to clean them, just recirculated oil through the breather system, thus they tend to carbon up, not seat properly and cause running issues, one being starting.
Cure is relatively simple and does not need the head removing like in days of old, modern remedy is to walnut shell blast the valves through the inlet ports with the inlet manifold removed, fairly cheap process at around £200 from a independent or £400 plus from BMW who also realise the issue and have spesific machines to do this.

I had mine replaced on my N18 R56 in June. The symptoms were poor starting over a month or so, and then the 'half power' warning light came on.

I got 25% off as a goodwill at Solihull MINI, I think it was around £250 in the end. If you're near, I can highly recommend using them.

In the USA, MINI offer a 10 year goodwill warranty on the HPFP. mad
