One Night in Bangkok
Discussion
Hi all,
The wife and I were due to be stopping in Koh Samui for a week on the way back to UK for Christmas.
However, having recently been caught in Bali with the ash cloud for a week longer than expected, we have canned the idea and now only have a 24 hour stop over in Bangkok.
We land early afternoon and fly out at 8pm the next day and are staying at the Banyan Tree. (I believe this is the place where they filmed the awful Hangover 2 movie scene with the roof top restaurant).
My question to the PH massive is... Given we only have 24 hours what would you say are the absolute 'must dos' in Bangkok.
Please note "ping pong ball" is not a recommendation, it is a sporting good.

We hired a private guide for two days from this company http://www.thaitourguide.com/privatetourguide.html our guide was Ms Aom, a lovely young lady, this let us see much more than we could have done on our own.
For one day I would probably try to do the Royal Palace, a market and perhaps Jim Thomson's house, a temple could probably be fitted in with the palace too.
Really depends what you want but I know that company are happy to create an itinerary to suit what you want to see, and I am sure there are other similar companies.
Soi Cowboy is interesting at night too.

Book somewhere good for dinner.
Bangkok food is the best in Thailand and affordable.
There is good shopping - if you're into that - and lots os knock-offs at MBK.
Take in a temple or a river cruise (one that goes down the smaller rivers where the well-off live) or a guided tour.
Avoid tuk-tuks/diamond stores etc. Google 'bangkok scams'. There's nothing too horrendous - it's just a shame to miss a sight because a scammer says that its closed.

Try The Bed Supper club for dinner. Pre book. It really is an interesting way to dine. I believe that Geroge Michael's 'I want your sex' video was filmed there. It's fun and perfectly acceptable for a couple to be. It is actually a restaurant with a night club adjacent.
Do the bar at the top of the Banyan tree. If clear skies then the view is amazing.
Go to MBK store and fill yer boots. Choose jeans and they will alter them for almost nothing in about half an hour.
Eat at a street vendor but choose the very busy ones and you'll eat the best food available anywhere for almost nothing.
Be polite, be considerate and for goodness sake, dont lose your cool at a Thai national or shout at them in public. It is the second most undesirable action in Thailand and may lead to violent behaviour. The most undesirable action is to disrespect the royal family. If someone catches you doing this in public, expect 8+ years in joil.
Have a great time, albeit short. The Thai people are amongst the nicest you'll ever meet.
