I suffer from permanent tinnitus following a fairly major ear infection about 10 years ago - some days are better than other and some days it's ever present. Stress seems to bring it on more.

However, there are many occasions where I can be doing something or nothing and suddenly there can be a loud "explosion" of "that" ringing that blocks out all other noise that lasts 10-15 seconds and then fades back to the "normal" tinnitus.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern and it always takes me by surprise by it happening and the almost ferocity of it.

I accept it as one of those things, but is it normal? Is it just me?

I had the same problem, doctor sent me to audiology department, and I ended up with hearing aids.

T.B.H. I still don't understand how it helps with tinnitus, but it does.

The way it works, if I remember rightly, is that you wear them and they produce white noise to train your brain to ignore the white noise.

I opted to not get them as my hearing is actually perfect, just with an overlay of ringing.

I suffer , I work in an environment where the air con is very noisy and blame this.

I see driller (dentist I believe?) works with what could be a contributing cause , those grinders can be quite piercing.

Do the rest of us have any ideas what could be the likely cause of our affliction?

I do think stress make the noise more noticeable btw.

Today is a "noise" day - I can hear everything with annoying clarity. The washing machine on the other side of the house, the boiler, a radiator ticking, the fridge compressor, the drone of an engine outside across the road (not even revving), the CPU fan on my laptop idling and, of course, my tinnitus.

I think I may put the radio on before my head explodes....

My BiL has it and it almost disappears when he comes back from a 2 week holiday in the sun. Either it's related to stress or he's allergic to England.

Interesting, mine's eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee at a very high pitch, constantly, sometimes worse than others. Like now, for instance. But I didn't sleep well last night.

I get eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee as well. Can't really notice during the day but when I settle down in the quiet evening it's more noticeable until I tune it out with some tv.

What's weird is the high pitch of my wife and child's voices really pings it - it's difficult to describe but after they say something I almost get after shocks of ear popping/vibration. It's most disconcerting. I wonder if I need my ears draining or something.

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

That's mine - well described smile

I slept badly and am in a crappy mood today and it's worse as a result.

I have it in my right ear mildly following a very bad cold/ear infection a few years ago. It does get worse if I hear a loud noise or fly. Mine is not that bad to be honest but just hope it wont get worse.

I get exactly the same. I have the constant Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise which I can cope with and also get the sudden explosion of noise that stops other external noises getting in. Like you, it lasts 10 or 15 seconds and fades out back to the normal Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise.

It doesn't seem to be caused by being in noisy environments or anything, it just randomly does it. It reminds me of the scene at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan when Tom Hanks ends up on the beach and everything goes muffled apart from a high pitch whine and it dies out as he takes in to realisation as to what's going on around him.

Pardon . . . ? smile

I have it too in my left ear, mild but it's always there like the high pitched whistle that CRT TVs used to make.

Some things make it worse: stress, paracetamol and loud noises.

Yes, my username gives away the cause of my tinnitus and other hearing issues. Hate the constant high pitched noise, but it's self inflicted I guess so can't really blame anyone but myself. Consultant says hearing in one ear is much worse than the other and that the response curve was a bit strange.

He also said he wanted to keep an eye on it, then cancelled my next appointment and didn't make a new one. That was well over a year ago now, I should probably make another - I'm fairly certain I suffered some hearing damage in China recently!

Think mine came from severe bout of Malaria, but high sugar or stress brings it on sometimes.

Same for me too.

I also get regular noises in one ear like it is full of water. Poxy ears!

Despite the ringing etc, and not being able to understand what is going on in noisy environments, I can pick up on other noises when it is quiet that nobody else can. Cars pulling up etc.

Get checked for a cholesteatoma, I've got to have my head opened up soon to have one removed irked It's unlikely that's what you've got but you shouldn't leave one untreated.
