The piano thread.
Discussion
Even as a guitar player, I love the piano.
Two of my favourite composers are Chopin and Philip Glass. I know Glass doesn't especially concentrate on piano works, but they are wonderful pieces and - for me - what he does best.
Two favourite examples :-
Chopin Ballade No.1
Glass Metamorphosis No.5
Much of Lizst's work appeals as well, not forgetting the giant that is Greig's Am piano concerto.

Fantastic piece.I like the scene in the Pianist. If it were me, I'd have been in trouble.
"What do you do?"
"Er... m... mime artist." <makes hand movements on invisible wall while German officer takes out pistol>

Anyone else love this instrument? I play synths but do love a nice piano.
One day I will have a Bosendorfer...
I have a Bosendorfer in my Mac. I'd have trouble fitting a real one in my upstairs studio! One day I will have a Bosendorfer...

I think this guy's work is really very good indeed; similar in many ways to Einaudi :

Was brought up on Chopin back when i was taking training, spent 8 years of my youth playing but it just all stopped when drink, women, work, drink, and more women got in the way.
I've been meaning for years to get back into it!!My other fault was i picked up an electric guitar and got more excitement out of that in 5 minutes than i ever did playing piano?

Hopefully that's the link you wanted? The Berceuse is a delicious piece of music. In other piano news, Radio Three's In Tune had 22 year old Beatrice Rana in the studio earlier this evening. Something of a prodigy, she was playing simple scales on the piano at 6 months old, playing Disney tunes at 3, and did her first "big" recital at the age of 9. She played in the studio earlier the Gigue from JSB's Partita #1. It was mesmerising.
Here she is talking to conductor Antonio Pappano :-

Same here. Been making electronic music with synths and software for over two decades but started taking piano lessons as I've never been formally trained to play or read music. About a year ago I acquired a Roland RD-700GX to help with the learning process I've been trying to teach myself this as well as the piano part from "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby and The Range.

Must admit the Kawais do look and sound lovely.
I played the Yamaha's alongside the Roland's and preferred the Yamaha. I then went to another store and played the Kawai against the top end CLP585 and preferred the action and sound of the Kawai. The Kawai CS10 is even better but it was too big and way over budget. I went in with a £1k budget and ended up spending twice as much. It should last me for years to come. vournikas said:

Good man!
I remember the first time I heard that listening to Genesis - Live! when I was about 14. Wonderful tune.

Hopefully that's the link you wanted? The Berceuse is a delicious piece of music.I'm getting back into the piano after a 20 year break, while I'm much more enthusiastic now than when I was 20 (ish ), it's a lot more difficult to learn stuff in my 40's. Mind you, having the internet helps a lot, although I'm also having lessons off a crazy russian up at the local university.
I know it's not for everyone, but for me, having lessons is a great motivator, if I was trying on my own I'd have stopped after a couple of weeks. Having a weekly appointment to go and get shouted at is great. She also drills right down into the detail, to get the expression and interpretation of each piece sorted.
I'm busy butchering Rimsky Korsakov, Dvorak and Khachaturian at the moment. All fiendishly tricky for someone of my limited ability, and in the case of the latter, ear splittingly discordant at times, which isn't entirely my fault .
Love it though, I wish I'd kept it up after I left Uni in the mid 90's. At the time it took a back seat due to work commitments.
