Hi,

My garage door is manual right now, its a very big double door has side rails already, had a quote and they mentioned its simple case of adding the motor and central rail and connect the chain via a bracket to the door. I am quite tempted to do this myself and wanted to know if it really is that straight forward. I already have power in the right place.

Also any recommendation on motor, the quote i got was £249 for supplying just the carteck motor and 2 remote fobs.

I had two Hormann Supramatic electric operators which were £280.00 each + VAT so your price seems cheap to me.

This is a single door, so just one motor. £249+VAT

I've had a Wickes electric garage door opener working on my bi (17' wide) garage door for about 15 years. Was easy to fit if you have got some DIY skills. Took a few hours and normal tools. Trickiest bit was fitting some cross-beams to hang the motor from.

Spoke to a hormann dealer today and they mentioned, having the springs tensioned properly and configuring the motor is not a joe bloggs task and off course they recommend pro installation. Looking at £500-600 installed, I'll be honest I am tempted to get it done by someone who knows but at the same time not too happy with the price.

Do you have another means of access to the garage, just in case the opener breaks and you can't get it to open?

The bloke who fitted mine did tell me about a bloke who DIY'd the springs and nearly took a finger off. He charged £250 + VAT fitting for two doors with electric openers so your fitting price seems very high. That took a morning...

Definitely worth chatting to this company. If you lived anywhere near Berkshire, I would say to have them do an install for you. However, I am sure they will help / advise with a DIY job. They are absolutely superb to deal with.

Very nice chap, so I am on the border of his 20 mile, he will do Seip for £435 fitted, local hormann dealer with do Hormann for £510 fitted (also fit an angle bead for me to cover the top open slot I have).

Decisions decisions.

Its defo a DIY job. Ours took no more than 3-4 hours to install and we did not have any clue what we were doing!

I have no association with http://www.amourelle.co.uk/ other than being a totally satisfied customer.
I have mentioned on here before that of all the tradesmen we have ever had to do any kind of work at our place, they have been the most professional, honest and expert company I have dealt with. (Well, them and Richard the plumber at J O Services...!)
If it were me, then it's a "no brainer"....
