Anyone got any idea what this issue might be, before I take it to my reliable indie?

No warning messages on dash.
No smoke or roughness or nasty noises.
Engine runs fine at low revs in all gears and cruises fine.

But when I boot it the boost falls off around 4000rpm, and the revs seems gain too quickly, car still accelerates but like the turbo has lost all pressure.
Turbo power seems to be fine in 2nd but problem appears in 3rd and 4th - Cannot be more specific because I didn't want to provoke anything worse

Hoping its just a hose or valve failing

Prob just a seized actuator rod on turbo. If not then coil packs.

Are you sure the clutch is not slipping?

I wondered that but would I not feel that when moving off from standstill or at all speeds?

If it is a manual, clutch could be the problem. As they are hydraulic assisted they can start slipping at higher revs/boost. Rev counter goes up, boost flies up and then drops off. I would have thought though you would see this in second as well if you boot it. If it is the clutch it will get progressively worse the more you drive it.

Let us know what the problem is when you get it checked out by the garage.

It is a manual, on 32,000 miles and what you describe is what is happening, but strangely not in 2nd. I searched PH and another thread described lost boost in higher gears so maybe it starts to slip there and then goes to lower gears.

I will report back.

First quote is £1200 including VAT - anyone done this recently for cheaper?

price sounds about right. Has it been power upgraded or is it standard

My car was doing much the same when the clutch was on the way out. Wasn't an issue in lower gears but 3rd and 4th particularly bad on full throttle. If it is the clutch, would recommend a Sachs replacement rather than OEM. Will handle much more torque and is cheaper than OPC - see Ken at 9e in Horsham if that's local.

Anything is cheaper than an OPC! Ken is not local but know his work is top notch as he did my PPI on my car, will give him a call and get a quote.

Is the Sachs any trickier to use?

Nine excellence are doing a very good Black Friday discount Adam, if you ring Ken tomorrow on 01293 226911 and quote 9EBF2015 discount code then as long as you have the work done before the end of Feb you will get the cheaper price. Tuning, servicing, exhausts and Clutches included in deal.
I have a Sachs 890 on my turbo, handles lots of power without slipping so you won't have to change again if you ever fancy having a bit of tuning done smile easy to drive with it too.

Thanks Jibaro that is very useful. Will definitely mention that

Is there any noticeable differing between OEM and Sachs when driving ? Can't afford to mod yet, focus is on getting car in tip top condition and serviced to my standards but happy to fit Sachs instead of it is harder wearing but not more tricky to use in town

The feel of the Sachs clutch and the OE clutch are meant to be the same, so it should be fine in town, further info on this thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Definitely sounds like clutch. If it needs changing I'd put the 9e clutch upgrade in. I looked at buying a car with one and 9e said it drives like normal. I wouldn't use a lightened flywheel though, I'd use standard one as I wouldn't want the rattling sound etc.
