You should log it with the Police (although they will probably respond with the usual apathy as it's not speed related) and personally I wouldn't bother with insurance, just get it fixed locally. If you don't use the key anyway just silicone the thing up in the meantime!

Some really nice people out there.

If you report it to the police it will effect your insurance if you report to them or not. It's just not worth the bother. If had your No.plates stolen yes report it but otherwise, they are not interested and its just another report clime in your area.

On the plus side at least they didn't do what they did to one of my cars-prise all the bloody metal work around the lock. Looks like that should be an easy cheap fix(not the point I know!). What car is it? On mine the rear handles have the same blank cover as the front, only the front has a hole for a key. I "de-locked" it by getting one of the rear handle ones & installing it on the front handle so no lock for them to try on. Worse scenario if I ever needed to get in via the lock is to drill the handle cover. Might be worth a look if it's a 4 door?

What? The insurance company won't go about getting OP's car repaired on anyone's say so, other than the policy holder's.

And the police won't get in touch with the insurer and tell them to effect a repair on a car!

Why will it have any affect on the insurance if he doesn't claim?

Just realised djt doesn't know the difference between 'effect' and 'affect', FFS.

rolleyes

I thought he was talking about the insurance company starting processing a claim if the police were notified.

Might not be his postcode, depends where it's parked at the time.

I had exactly the same thing as that on my girlfriend's 1-Series coupe.

From memory, barrel and supply and spray of the surround was £190 ish. Fitted in no time at all but took 6 weeks to order from BMW (it turned up in 3 weeks).

Don't see why it would effect the MOT, as long as you can open the door from the outside and inside.

TVR's have no locks and pass without issue.

My suggestion: Replace barrel, get a set of key blades cut on the cheap, one for each lock, then saw 10mm off the front of them. Insert the newly-removed 10mm of key into the lock, then use the keys as normal - if they've cloned your key it won't fit in the lock properly.

confused How would you cut a key from the barrel? You can get keys cut for lower security items as the key code is stamped on the barrel. Higher security items you sometimes get a card with the key code. I can't see BMW stamping the code on the barrel for obvious reasons!

For some reason this bodge really appeals to me! I feel like I want to go and do it to my car just for fun.

They'll smash the st out of the lock again. Seriously, making a mess as posted in this thread is not the doing of professional car thieves.
