opinions on this?

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pinnacle/dolom...

I've been looking for a low cost road bike, but the market seems flooded !
on paper this looks good value to me ;
anything on here that would say 'no don't buy' ?

It would be for occasional weekend rides plus daily to the train station

Last road bike I owned was a BMC SLR01
I was fitter then though smile

It's ok for the money but the components are not the best. For that kind of money you might be better off looking at second hand or maybe one of the Decathlon bikes

If this fits and you can up your budget, then I would highly recommend the 2015 Five.
Pinnacle bikes are well designed and good spec for the money.

I'd say that's good value for the money. And it weighs less than 10kg, which is pretty good at this segment.

thanks all - can't justify £300 notes extra to save 800g smile

I'd rather replace with upgraded bits as they wear out.
going to pull the trigger I think

Not sure it is: the equivalent BTwin has microshifters (not as good as Claris) and is 1kg heavier.

eta I say this as a man with four BTwin bikes...

This might also be worth a look:

Sora drivetrain, still with carbon fork, even cheaper.

Good find, Id buy this, covers all angles and looks cheap!

Ive got a couple of modern Raleighs and they are good bikes

Plenty of bike for the money there. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, will do the job perfectly well.

The main negatives with buying a road bike at that price point is that a lot of them are quite weighty and/or don't have integrated shifters. However, in this case with integrated shifters and at 9.5kg the Pinnacle looks a real bargain.

For the money you can't go far wrong with this or the Raleigh recommended above, which looks an even better find.

thanks for the Raleigh find - takes me back to my childhood smile

choices choices...
200g saving costs me 40 notes, and gets me a lower spec groupset... and next day delivery
but the other is 4-6 working days delivey

If I could only sit on both before purchasing !

Actual weight of the 5 as tested was 8.7kg.
That would suggest that the Pinnacle "claimed" weights are pretty accurate. I am surprised there is only a few hundred grams difference though as Claris is much heavier than SRAM Rival.

800g is pretty big difference in weight on bikes at this level.

I really wouldn't worry about marginal weight differences for occasional riding even more so if you have any excess weight on yourself

One of my bikes weights 4kg more than my lightest!

Similar situation here. Weight in itself doesn't seem to make any discernible difference to either my speed on the road, or how I feel after a ride. What makes the biggest difference (to me, at least) when it comes to bikes, and especially climbing hills on bikes, is gearing. My heaviest bike was also the highest geared of my bikes. It's still the highest geared of my bikes, but I bought a new cassette with a 28t low gear instead of it's original 23t gear, and it has been transformed from a "bike of last resort" to one that is a joy to ride, and (because mudguards) it is currently my go-to bike for any and all road riding. It's not as nippy going up as my new Trek (34 x 28 low gear) but now (with it's 39 x 28 low gear) I can do a passable impersonation of "comfortable up this hill" instead of the dark days (of 39 x 23) when I would avoid routes with any steeper hills, and pretty much had to stand up to get up anything beyond single digit gradients. Mostly, though, when I hit hills on it in the 'old days' I just wanted to get off and walk... paperbag

Got two Pinnacle's being delivered to the Evans shop near work today - L or XL as I can't decide on size.
going for a ride at lunchtime
then it's decision time

Well, there is now an xl pinnacle bike sat in the garage.
Very pleased with it. And with the whole Evans purchase experience. Thanks to the Notting hill branch !
Plenty light enough and the low end shims I kit works wonderfully.
Going to enjoy this I think
