Does anyone else have an almost permanently blocked nose to a degree? Not a cold, just consistently restricted breathing. On the rare occasion I'm not blocked up, only one nostril at a time is ever clear, never both.

I got a nasal spray to try from the doctor and it's done absolutely fk all. I've been like this all my life and never thought anything of it until the Mrs. pointed it out.

Perennial Rhinitis.

Basically hayfever but without the itchy eyes and year round. Its an allergic reaction to something.

I have had it since I was a kid and they have never found what the allergy is.

Any treatment help?

The nasal spray I got was Avamys, which is meant to tackle allergic rhinitis.

It could be sinusitis (amongst many other things).

I had a blocked nose for almost 3 weeks and lost my sense of taste.

Tried various sprays, all useless, and in the end the only thing that worked for me was a Neilmed Sinus Rinse kit.

Get it checked out for nasal polyps.

Yes, I've had this since living in NL and can only put it down to living near Schipol airport. It comes and goes, sometimes it is very bad and I become a mouth breather, other times it is only very slightly noticeable. Unfortunately drinking beer seems to bring it on quite badly eek whereas drinking plenty of water tends to ease it off. Whist in Germany earlier in the year I went to a pharmacy and they gave me a nose spray, it was awesome at opening the passages but only lasted around half a day and obviously was not curing the cause, just relieving the symptoms.

I have had Polyps for approx' 3 years. I've tried all the drops and steroids, which work for a short time, but the polyps come back within a few weeks. I've got a consultant appointment next week to discuss their removal!

My main symptom is a constant blocked nose. Though when I get a cold it hangs around for ages. I also produce a large amount of snot. My sense of smell and taste is very poor. I can't wait to get rid of the bloody things!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but don't expect miracles. My OH had her polyps removed about 18 months ago. Her sense of smell came back for about 6 weeks and then went again. Still has the issues now and her sleep is very fractured with bouts of stopping breathing - not often enough for it to be classed as sleep apnoea though.

Her fractured sleeping and snoring obviously impacts upon me as well

Highly allergic to dust mites and mildly allergic to cats - we were able to rehome the cat but not much we can do about the other apart from more regular deep cleaning. Everything that we have tried has made zero difference. At my wits end tbh

I have this.

Went through a referral to an ENT specialist, who stuck a camera up both nostrils. Mildly deviated septum, but nothing too bad. What was obvious though was that the lining of my nose was heavily inflamed.

Got a further referral for a skin prick allergy test, which showed very strongly for two kinds of dust mites (but not cats, surprisingly). So, I'm on the steroid drops, then nasal spray to thin the lining, and also avoidance (dusting regularly, looking at air purifiers, dust sheets for the bed, etc). Then if that doesn't work in 3-6 months they're going to consider me for the new dust immunisation therapy that is doing the rounds. That will take a year if I'm put on it.

It really can be life altering, and very stressful. You have my sympathy.

You could try avoiding all dairy products for 4-6 weeks. Many people are intolerant (without knowing it as they've eaten them all of their lives) and it produces mucus as a reaction.

I got passed between dentist and doctor for years. As a kid I struggled a little with my sinuses (unbearable on flights etc) as a 'grown up' I had a perma-blocked nose. A while back I had a tooth out, which was done in hospital as the root was "close" to the sinus gland.

Tooth out and my world changed overnight! So much so, that the same tooth the other side has also been taken out and I feel like normal.

ok then keep using chemicals to treat the symptoms rather than cure a probable cause.

Been there as well. Some 15 years ago and after the op, preferred to suffer when they came back after many years. However, recent visit to the consultant and I have ended up on Fluticasone furoate (obviously prescribed so may be of no use to the OP!!!!) and seems to be knocking it back. But that is my case. The consultant said the other option is back under the knife and I would not look forward to that again, though the two weeks off after was a nice break. It is a full lights out anaesthetic for the op.

Edit. I have removed all carpets from the house and it has improved me somewhat, the house dust mite seems to be my nemesis.

A couple of years back I was suffering from a constantly blocked/runny nose. I wonder if it's something to do with all the nasty things I have to use at work, chemicals and fibres...

Went to the doctors a year ago and they prescribed beconase nasal spray, two sprays per nostril twice a day. I was self treating it with some blocked nose spray which worked temporarily unblocking my nose but then making it run, the doctor said these do more harm than good apprently.

At first the beconase did absolutely nothing, but after a week of use it worked and i was back to normal. The problem is if I stop using it now the problem comes back! I need to go back to the doctors really but I've been too lazy. I don't want to be taking this stuff forever!

I had this too and was told it was acute rhinitis.

The doctor has told me its pointless trying to work out what I am allergic too as it could be a million different things. She told me like the previous poster to use beconase spray morning and night and take an antihistamine table once a day like this.

http://pharmacykwik.co.uk/products/12-months-suppl...

They are non prescription and very cheap, less than a tenner for a years supply!

It controls it 100%. If I forget to take it for a couple of days the sniffs and blocked nose returns. No point trying to fix it just control it!!

I was diagnosed with mild Rhinitis a few years ago. Prescribed Ayamys nasal spray which, taken twice a day, keeps my nose unblocked. If i don't use it then eventually my nose blocks up completely. Mildly annoying but easy to live with in the grand scheme of things.

This made a huge difference for me, exactly the same problem as you describe OP: https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/14343
