Hello. Earlier this week I bought a 2007 Range Rover 4.4 Vogue SE. It's our first RR; my wife has had one one her bucket list for as long as I've known her and after a crappy year for her I thought I'd sell my Audi S8 and treat her to one as an early Xmas present.

Despite 130,000 miles on the clock it's obviously been very well looked after and everything works. It also comes with a full LR Main Dealer service history. While we're not adverse to paying main dealer servicing costs (I've been quoted £550 inc VAT and labour), the indie garage that we've always taken our cars to are very capable and trustworthy. We've used them for years and the owner is well into his Defenders as well as the occasional Range Rover. He knows his way around Land Rovers basically.

Is it worth maintaining a main dealer history on a vehicle of that age and mileage? Will it help it keep some value in a few years when we trade it in, or at this stage of it's life does it matter who services it as long as it's done regularly and by someone who knows what they are doing?

Personally, it wouldn't matter.

I would have it looked after by a good independent garage as they are usually ex Land Rover workers, know the cars and are vastly cheaper for prices.

Does it have decent history for parts replaced?
It's getting to the mileage where some parts may be wearing out.
Has it has the gearbox oil and filter changed?
The ZF box likes oil changes and can judder when the torque converter gets worn.

Only if you're selling to a trader.

If you're buying from a trader it's not so important.

Quite similar to number of previous owners... .

Waste of money at that age and mileage.

1-3 years - dealer
3-5 indy
5+ indy or self service

I service my own cars and put the reciepts for the parts used in the folder that goes with the car. Nobody has ever called me out on it - but then again when I sell a car, its old but clearly looked after and evidence of maintenance is sufficient.

As detailed above

If you want the car serviced by people used to working on cars of that age and milage (and the typical problems they face and know of the most cost effective solutions) - take it to an indie

I sold my wife's 3 year old disco to the trade, first thing they did was get it serviced at a well respected indie.

it's one of the biggest jokes going

Just like a car is scrap after 100k

once someone knows what they are doing the fact they have a swanky uniform with a dealer on it is irrelevant.

What is relevant is good bits are used and specs followed ( such as torque ratings)

The only problem is the 100k brigade also think dealer mechanics have some sort of magic hammer.

I agree - the 100,000 mile mark is an arbitary figure that seems to strike fear into a lot of people. I had a Golf that I took up to 268,000 and it was still running like a dream.

The only reason I asked about main dealers was to see if there was any point in paying their prices to retain value in the car. Now I know there isn't, we'll take it elsewhere.

Second hand cars never made it to 100k miles in the old days because every dealer they went through clocked them, now it's not so common and we're getting used to buying higher mileage cars.

And no I wouldn't bother with a main dealer after the manufacturers warranty has expired.
