Used to love Dire Straits back in 'the day'. Money For Nothing, Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing - classics that I still listen to occasionally.

Earlier this year someone put this video into the youtube thread, mainly (presumably) because it's got some nice cars in it.

It's a short trailer (I suppose you'd call it) for Mark Knopfler's latest - 'Tracker'. 'I quite like that' I thought, so I bought it.

Very different to 'Money For Nothing' (for example), but crikey, it's good. Some of the songs just flow over you like warm honey. I had it on my iPhone during a long overnight flight to Dubai. Having done a couple of movies and unable to sleep I put it on and just melted into it - played it right through twice and time flew. Absolutely love it.

So I've bought a few more of his recent stuff: All The Roadrunning, Golden Heart, Shangri-La, Sailing To Philadelphia, Privateering. None quite hit the spot that Tracker does but they're blimmin close and blimmin good, just a lovely lovely sound. Got Shangri-La on now.

Funny really, if it hadn't have been for that video clip I'd be non the wiser that he was even still making music.

Makes me wonder what else is out there that I have no idea exists.

I saw the same trailer, and bought Tracker - I had Sailing to Philadelphia from years ago, but had forgotten about it. It fits very well with Tracker, I think, similar feel to the songs - They have a lovely folky sound, but about some quite modern stories - He writes some fascinating characters, and the guitar sound just warms you and soaks into you like a good red wine.

Like you I have since picked up Privateering and Roadrunning and now Shangri-La which is just starting to really grow on me too.

Anyone who wants a primer on Knopfler should watch him on Guitar Stories, telling his life and music though various guitars, from buying his first cheap replica, to writing a song about the man who made a top-end custom guitar for him, and still gigging in a little pub with some other old guys who shares his passion.

The man is legendary.

number one influence from my childhood - my first ever 'album' was a copy of Alchemy on tape smile
Seen him a couple of times - never disappoints

Such an intuitive clean style to his playing

one of the reasons I'm still playing guitar these days
