They're knocking down the Fawlty Towers hotel to make retirement flats! Had never really thought about it as a real place, but I am surprised to read that it went bust. Surely extra money could have been made doing themed weekends with actors entertaining the Basil! fans? Maybe just geographically too remote from London for that?

Seems a shame. frown

This was not the building used for filming. That, I believe, was demolished some years ago?

This is what is being knocked down:

It was the inspiration for the programme, rather than the building seen in the opening titles.

from wiki:

Although the series is set in Torquay in Devon, no part of it was shot in south west England. For the exterior filming, the Wooburn Grange Country Club in Buckinghamshire was used instead of a hotel.[7][8] In several episodes of the series (notably "The Kipper and the Corpse", "The Anniversary" and "Basil the Rat") the entrance gate at the bottom of the drive states the real name of the location. This listed building later served as a nightclub named "Basil's" for a short time after the series ended before being destroyed by a fire in March 1991.[9][10] The remnants of the building were demolished and a housing estate was built on the site.

Ha, yes that looks lovely! Ok, no loss then, didn't realise that the filming location was different! A bit of a "que?" moment then.

It was the inspiration for John Cleese when the Python Team stayed there. The owner and manager was so unbelievably rude and useless that he became Basil.

I remember john cleese talking about it, and saying one of them left a brief case in the lobby. The manager moved it outside behind a wall. When asked why, he replied that he thought it might be a bomb.....due to some recent staff troubles smile

So none of it was filmed on location then, any ideas where Andre's restaurant/the BMC 1100 scenes were filmed?

The filming location in Wooburn has been gone for decades. I swung in once on my way to a mates in Wooburn Green,. having meant to for years and just drove into a cul de sac. Then my stepdad told me it has been gone for years...

The entrance off the main road looks similar, that's about it
