Hi all,

Is it worth getting my 6 y/o a Wii U for xmas?

He enjoys watching me on my PS4 but I find most of the games on there are a bit too advanced/age restricted for a young boy. We play Minecraft together and he loves this but I'd like to broaden his horizons on the gaming front.

As these consoles still aren't particularly cheap I don't want to waste my hard earned cash on something he won't play/use. I had all of the Nintendo consoles growing up from the NES to the N64 and it would be great for him to have the same enjoyment I did whilst growing up!

Any other dads out there play these with their kids when its wet/cold outside? Are they any good? What games would you recommend? Any tips on bundles? Is it worth getting the Premium console or can a usb stick be used for the extra memory?

Thanks all!

Jon

Hi

I am not a dad but am an owner of a Wii u.

Out of all the consoles imo it is the better one for youngsters. More cheery games and more opportunity to use the motion control stuff.

I tried some of the lego RPG games and they are good fun and deffo aimed at the young team.

The typical mario stuff is also fun for all ages (world and kart).

The just dance stuff is amusing to get up and give a go no matter who you are and what age.

I went to buy the 8gb one as it was on mega offer at the time but found it was sold out so bought the next size up (32gb I think?) a couple of years ago.

I don't think the 8GB one is a good idea but that isn't based on owning one :-).

Good luck and hopefully others will pipe up. For ref I have ps3 ps4 and wii u for comparison.

I personally wouldn't, not because the games aren't good (they are great), but that there's simply so few of them and Nintendo are likely to drop it within the next year and focus on their next console. There's only a few games they've got coming out for it in the next year and they are almost all made by Nintendo, almost all the other publishers have dropped support for it. If you look up the Nintendo NX, that's their next project and appears to be where their attention is focused.

As an alternative, have you seen Lego Dimensions? You can get hold of the kits for the PS4 and it makes me wish I had children so I'd have an excuse to buy it.

Thanks both, very helpful. As you've both mentioned the games being good i'll probably give it a shot for him. I did originally think about a 3DS but then thought a wii u would be better as his mum and I could join in too. Something for all the family I guess.. Will look into just dance too as that should be fun. Lego Dimensions is also already on his list.

Thanks again,

Jon

We got our son a Wii U for his 7th birthday & he loves it. The Lego games really are very good & you can help him play along as a 2nd player which I do a lot - they are excellent fun. There is a Minecraft type game available on the Nintendo store for a few quid - Minecraft itself isn't available. It's also worth remembering you can play Wii games on it & you can pick them up for a couple of quid now second hand as well as the accessories like guns etc.

For me, the best bit about the Wii U is the fact he can be playing Mario Kart or Lego Marvel on the handheld pad without having to use the TV.

Lego Dimensions is a "next year" purchase for us - he's been banging on about Disney Infinity Star Wars so we've got him that for Christmas!

We've got the "bigger" model but that's really because it came with headphones, Super Mario, Mario Kart & Lego Marvels as a package and was only about £25 more than the "smaller" model.

Well just to conclude chaps I have to say this was probably they best £250 quid I've ever spent. My little boy absolutely loves it. The Super Mario 3D World is fantastic, we play co-op mode together and its fantastic to see the excitement and enjoyment he gets out of it just as I did as a nipper.

I really am surprised that these consoles aren't more popular! I think every dad with a child under 13 or so should get one for his child.

A big plus too is that you can download quite a few of the older more popular NES, SuperNES and N64 games from the online shop for next to nothing. It's great to re live some of my childhood games.

I would really recommend this to anyone with kids. My little boy I are thoroughly enjoying it and its a little bit of priceless time we get to spend together when his mother is cooking the dinner!

If you like playing games with him then the Lego games are great - in particular the Marvel one is brilliant. One user (your son, natch) uses the Wii U pad/screen & you use the TV so it doesn't split the screen in half. Lego City Undercover is only single player, but is basically GTA Lego & makes good use of the pad as it turns it into a communicator/heat camera/eavesdropping device etc.

Splatoon is not bad, but can be quite tricky for a new player (and I'm not just talking about the 6-year oldlaugh).

Very underrated console if you ask me.

Could you get him a Wii (old version) as that will cost about a p from eBay. Get him used to the thing and get a more up to date one when he's older?

Depends how much YOU want a Wii U really smile
