Removing anything Google related from smartphone, possible?
Discussion
Was merrily browsing the internet (using Google Chrome)when suddenly i was literally stopped in my tracks by a data protection agreement i had to agree to.
First off it pissed me off due to the nature of how this happened,it was agree or it just wouldn't let me continue my browsing!!
This data protection pop up that covered my screen began with stating,"To be consistent with data protection laws......",then went on to basically state that they wanted me to agree to use all my data and to do basically whatever they wanted to do with it?How is that ,"data protection?".
Seeing this in black and white and getting it firced down my neck really irked me and as far as i can,i want nothing more to do with Google whatsoever!,but when you try to remove anything Google from a smartphone you're told the world's going to end and your phone will go haywire!!Is there any truth to this?(not the world ending bit)
Same with every little innocuous app you download wants access to your photos, files, personal data etc,etc..Why?Do we all just stick our pert little bottoms in the air and say hey, take it all!!
I've even stopped downloading apps altogether!!Does anyone else feel like this?and breath......

No. The data that I allow them to mine is a reasonable price for the services they offer. But I'm reasonably careful of the public data I put out there, and stuff I dont want Google etc to see doesn't go near those storage or transport mechanisms.
As to your answer, there's a good market for old Nokia bricks on the bay.

It's an LG g3,im not new to smartphones and i do get your point that you think its all too complicated for me and go back to old Nokia bricks etc.
I can't understand why technology and giving up everything about yourself has to go hand in hand? Its the only downside to smartphones for me,i hate it!;-)
I really don't get how Google phrase this agreement thing, they mention data protection, then they 'want' all your data and where can all that potentially end up??

That stuff has always been there, its just you have become more aware of it as the companies thriving on your data have been forced to be explicit in stating what, where and why.
I'm not saying you can't cope with technology, I am saying that you trade personal data for things. Google's Android team, funnily enough, don't work for free, so you pay for Android, not in dollars, but in information.
As above, Apple and MS do the same thing, to a lesser or greater degree. You could look for hyper secure Android forks, but they wont have the Play Store.

If you're that bothered and can be arsed with customs ROMs and flashing your phone then yes.
Most custom ROMs have the G apps as a separate zip package, in addition if you did install the g apps then a lot of ROMs come with extra privacy controls to give you control over what data you do expose.
In all honesty though how far donyou want to take this? As others have said an old Nokia could be the answer, crippling a smart phone can defeat the point.

Interesting thread, I have to ask though, what are you so concerned about? I don't understand why people get so het up about this stuff
It is quite scary what cloud companies can do for you in the name of convenience - not scary in a "I'm afraid" way but scary even as someone who works in IT so should know this st I went for a business trip in London a month back and did some sight-seeing and took some photos with my phone, thought little of it as I don't use my camera phone all that often.
On the train on the way home I got a notification that Google had put together an album of "bhstewie's day out in London" with a nice little map and photo timeline of everywhere I'd been.
Whilst I don't really mind, as far as I was concerned I was just pissing about taking some photos.

I don't know, there's something just jarrs me when i download an app to say,i don't know?to bake a fairy cake and it wants access to my music, files, videos, personal data,location......it really gets on my goat!!why is it just me?why!!! ;-)Just thought for the hell of it i'd try to remove google services(which i know i can't)and was quite interested to note that amonhst the longlong list of things google snoops on in your phone are your text messages!!!Honestly, what???Thinknabout that the next time you text your lobed one, that's unbelievable!!÷
I wish people would just take two m8nutes to really look into whats going on with their phone,we just never think about it!!Reading text messages?I thought that was only done by the police during an investigation after you'd murdered someone lol.
But as i seem to be the only one worrying about this you can rest easy now im worrying for you all!! ;-)

Most people, myself included, aren't interesting or important enough for their data to be of any particular worth beyond statistical use - e.g. like for Google Maps traffic data.
It seems to be an exclusively millennial attitude however that one is a special snowflake whom everyone, particularly big evil corporations like Google, are dying to profile and monitor. The reality, sadly, is that most people's personal data is rather mundane and unremarkable.
Not suggesting the OP is one of these people, but I'd suggest perhaps looking into the multitude of ways we already sacrifice absolute privacy simply by carrying around mobiles (which can be triangulated to a location), loyalty cards (which tell all sorts about your buying habits), etc before getting too worked up over Google services.

The reward for having your text messages read at a metadata level to help target adverts is having Google back them up, so the next time you drop your phone down the toilet, and claim an upgrade on insurance, all those dirty little texts from Shaznay will still be there when you reinstall.I wish people would just take two m8nutes to really look into whats going on with their phone,we just never think about it!!Reading text messages?I thought that was only done by the police during an investigation after you'd murdered someone lol.

Collected data can be used by secret services to discredit/blackmail who they believe are radicals. Whom they believe to be radicals can change every day/hour/second - it could be you or any couraged citizen who is prepared to fight for your freedom.
