190 Cosworth...worth buying for the wife?
Discussion
So need a car for the wife but not quite sure what to get. Was thinking about something like this:
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...
The question is though would you want to spend 9k on an old Merc or a new Merc.
For:
Nice car, nice colour
Looks clean and well maintained
QCar
Against:
Old car
Wife would not appreciate it, would prefer something new and shinny!
Maintenance lots!
No mod cons
Have to be careful (Avoiding scuffs, parking correctly)
10k on a old car!

Don't know your circumstances - but for me this is the weekend car - not the everyday school / shopping car. Very nice, but to be looked after carefully to maintain value moving forward, whilst enjoying it as much as you can. Would the wife appreciate a dog leg ?
I personally don't like the colour - no fan of silver, and would have liked to have seen the full leather inside, although the car still looks good. Having not been looking I can't say whether its well priced, or on the top side. But good 190's are now very much rising due to availability of well maintained specimen's. Mine was only a 2 ltr auto - sold due to lack of storage / use - but would have another at the drop of a hat.

Thanks for the response.
If she wants one and is into the whole old car thing, then yes. Otherwise, definitely not.
By the "whole old car thing" I mean this. These cars are perfectly capable of being used as daily drivers so long as they are properly maintained. But you have to enjoy the business of maintaining them; suffering, identifying, diagnosing and repairing the inevitable occasional faults you have to make part of the hobby rather than the price of the hobby. Otherwise you'll just hate the car.
My wife runs a 1990 190 as her daily and loves it. But it was all her idea. Had I foisted it upon her, no doubt it would nary turn a wheel.

Good point. I can't think why you'd foist a car on a loved one. Except a 17 year old son who believes he should have a 190 Cosworth, yet in reality will have a leased VW Up.
On a related note, I owned a Porsche 924 Carrera with both left hand drive and a dog-leg 'box. Mrs Veloce drove it fairly regularly to a high standard, which impressed me...

Panel fit suggests to me it has been painted. I bet it's full of filler under the kitIt could have been a shed for many years that has been given a new paint job an quick freshen up.
Whatever you do, do not discuss the merits of any particular car.
Do not mention the naff clear front indicators and repeaters.
Do not speak of the Pirelli P6000 ditch finder rear tyres.
Certainly do not observe that the relationship of front wing to front bumper and bonnet suggests said wing is an inferior aftermarket replacement.
The defective off side headlamp wiper is probably off limits, too.
Likewise the irritating phone antenna in the rear screen.
And as for the miserable vendor, well, keep that to yourself.
Weather looks nice in his pictures doesn't it? Oops, probably best not to point out that it has been for sale for what seems like forever. I doubt you could even say that it looks like a fairly decent but far from perfect example that is possibly over-priced.

Whilst not wishing to engage in any arguement here, my point was purely on the fact that an assumption was put forward against my car to a person who showed a small amount of interest. I don't appreciate assumptions being made on any car like that. If anyone has views on the condition of it, that's fine, I'm happy to take the knocks about it, and I know the car has its faults with regards to non-original parts on it. My issue is with someone suggesting that the fundamental condition being called into question by someone who hasn't even seen it. I know the car isn't perfect, but then it's not advertised as perfect. The picture I used was taken back in the spring, but that was for my own benefit, and I just happened to use it as the main picture, that's all.Do not mention the naff clear front indicators and repeaters.

As I say, I have no desire to engage an arguement, and I apologise if my sentiment came across as aggressive (or miserable as you suggest). I metaphorically shake your hand and ask for forgiveness as a true gentleman should.
I'm sorry, that is not allowed, either. The rules of Pistonheads dictate that we should argue intensely over increasingly arcane points for the next fifteen pages until we have descended to the level of personal insults using only swear words and forgotten what it is all about in the first place.
Sorry if my response was a bit ttful. It's a nice car and the interior is certainly a lot better than most.

It does indeed look handsome; I like the 129 wheels, which were subsequently used by Mercedes on the 190 Evolution.
I think Mr B could use the opportunity here to extol some virtues of his 190, as any publicity could be used to his advantage in selling the car. It's probably over priced, but these things are on the up.
