Article about shooting in Northern Ireland here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-3494...

I was just wondering if it is routine for police cars to be armoured in NI?

I'd imagine so yes.

Fairly routine, yeah. The windows always are, you used to be able to tell a police car by the plates - often English registered, so dated plates - and / or a rainbow haze on the windows.

In certain areas they use armoured cars, mostly no.

If you didn't already know all PSNI officers are armed and wear body armour.

The vehicles that are armoured are usually rather old as it costs so much to equip them.

BMW do an off the peg vehicle for cheaper but the BS politics is that the public may think a BMW is an expensive waste.

Then there is the Tangi Land Rovers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Tangi

Armoured saloon cars are the norm in certain areas and available in most. Tangi's have been largely replaced by commercially produced ALR now.

I would be concerned about this. Their modus opperandi might be try it first with normal ball amunition to see where the armour is and repeat later with armour piercing rounds. Quite good grouping depending of course on the range. It really is sad to see this type of happening again in NI. None of us want it.

Their MO is to test where the armour is with ball ammunition?

Christ. I've read some nonsense on this site but this takes the biscuit.

In fairness their modus operandi seems to be to do something stupid like this and then get arrested a few hours later.

Why, it's a common enough IRA method, they get the info and apply the lessons learned in another situation. Not exactly and not just this bit alone but used in an overal plan. Said as one who has seen it happen. I could be wrong though and have to take you kind offer of a biscuit.

West Belfast is a republican stronghold, all security forces, civil and military patrolling the area did so in armoured vehicles. I'm ex Royal Military Police and was in the province in the late 80s, we always went in the highest risk areas in armoured vehicles.

It's not and never has been a common enough IRA method, yes they look at last operations and use the lessons learned for another situation, but do you honestly think that Seamus O'Finnegan is going to pull his AK from under his bed and then go -

'Right, I'll just put one in the lower part of the drivers door, the next through the rear door' while making detailed notes.

I'd love to know where you saw this type of thing.
