The time has come to move the old family favourite - our 04 XC90 2.4d SE. Owned for just over 3 years and 55,000 miles its been one of the best all-rounders I have owned. It did everything from ferrying many kids around, being a race van for my sons cadet kart to taking a whole bathroom to the dump. It did it all without complaint and still looked rather good once cleaned up. It was comfortable, reassuring planted and sturdy. More than once it made others on the road consider whether they really wanted to take on 2 tonnes of Swedish steel with their euro box. The negatives were few; it was slow to accelerate but fine at cruising, it had the turning circle of a small village in Devon and it was a little bit thirsty.

But the wife decided it needed to go, and as she drives it mostly, the replacement was chosen for me, in the shape of the new RR Evoque. Ordered in June and delivered last week while we waited for the new model and ingenium engine to be launched it really is streets ahead of the Volvo. Its smaller granted, but we no longer need 7 seats, but the technology included as standard is seriously impressive. The 2.0Td4 180 engine mated to the 9 speed auto is so much quicker and yet with only 400 miles under its belt its already averaging 9mpg more than the Volvo. We ended up getting the car from the main dealer in Aberdeen as our local dealer in Hampshire was useless - but it just goes to show the power of the internet how we were able to find a substantially better deal without leaving the house.

The Evoque is comfortable but feels compact on the road, but the Volvo was more like driving an armchair with the size to match. I know some of the PH massive look down on the little RR but compared to other cars we looked at (Qashqai, Q5, Sportage, etc) the quality of fit, finish and feel good factor is far superior, and as we found out, once you start speccing the others to something you actually want, the cost difference soon shrinks. We went for the mid range SE Tech as it has all the bits we wanted, heated seats, nav, electric everything, parking sensors, etc. The next model up - Dynamic was very nice too but we just couldn't justify the 7k difference in price for what you actually get.

Lets see if the baby RR becomes as much of a family member as the Volvo did - only time will tell

Just the wheels to sort out as the factory put the wrong ones on frown anyway, pics would help!

I like it, especially the colour. It looks a lot less Cheshire in that Red.
