Can anyone recommend a good place in the NorthWest (Stockport ish?) to get some preventative work done on the Chim chassis. It's a 1996 500 only 23k miles always cocooned and never needed chassis work but I now want to get the surface rust scraped off (nothing major like body off!) and protect steel with some coating, what?
I'm not a DIY'er so who can I trust to do a good job?
Thanks

You may find that some garages are reluctant to do this sort of 'partial' job.

It is difficult to know where to stop.

I had my Chim in for engine and gearbox rebuild and whilst the engine and box had gone off I had the 'The Garage' do some remedial/preventitive work.

It was explained to me that it is difficult to do jobs like this as you are asking for them for a less than perfect job ( a perfect job is to replace or shot blast and totally re coat etc).

We agreed that it was sensible to do what was possible ( to good an opportunity to miss with engine and gearbox out)and agreed how long should be spent on it. Main area of concern was near the manifolds.

I specified the materials to be used and the extent of what should be done when rust could be seen and agreed a price/time to be spent on it.

I am glad I had it done, (even though what was revealed wasn't bad) as it has given me peace of mind.

.....or, you could have a word with Ivor Watson at First Tyre Plus in Handforth, Cheadle. Ivor is a Tuscan Challenge racer and looks after and renovates lots of TVRs in his very well equipped garage. Not sure if he does that kind of work but it's worth asking. Mine will be there in the morning for 4 new Toyos....

Hi, I was thinking of raising a similar question. I have a 17k mile Chim 400 and whilst the chassis is excellent, there is some minor surfsce rust in parts I would like to treat. To do this I will use a dremmel tool and sand paper, then apply rust proofer, undercoat and a chassis paint.

This is my question: the chassis is painted factory grey. What is a suitable paint for the chassis which matches this?

Further to this, I need to remove the bonnet and restick the hinge section. My mate who runs a paint shop reckons stock automotive panel glue should do it. I spoke to a "TVR specialist" who wanted £500 for the job, saying it needs to be done in a special way. But this seems really expensive?

Any knowledgeable comments would be appreciated.

Willow Sports cars in Newark probably the best out there but may not do a partial.

I personally know many who have used their services and the results a stunning, it is all in the detail..

It is also where my chassis is right now.

It would be nice to see some chassis pictures. Nick did my chassis 4 year's ago and its still gleaming, good choice picking str8six Nottingham smile.
