I am doing a fair bit of mileage in my new Job. I am considering a diesel as my M5 isn't really something I want to use for site visits etc. I'll have a budget of around £2500. I have been looking at s320 cdi's (w220), but is there anything else I should be considering?

Thanks

This ^^

Not as smooth as the BMW 6-cyl engine but a world apart from a four pot with, dare I say it, quite a pleasant growl to it...

Won't regret getting a Volvo for doing lots of miles either, even my old boss and good friend who genuinely waits each month for his official BMW magazine to hit his doormat conceded that biggrin

For £2.5k I'd go for a petrol. An S class diesel for that budget would be on 150k + miles with big bills on the horizon. You could get a decent S320 or even an S500 for that much with literally half the miles.

Merc 270 is 5 cylinder in C or E Class & is in that price bracket.

FWIW, I had a 54 plate C270 CDi & thought it the most agricultural thing i ever drove.

Dont!!!

I have a Volvo derived I5 diesel in my Ranger. Smoothness isn't something particularly noteworthy about it.

I'd say an E320 3.2 inline 6 or the 270 is a good engine as a 5 cylinder the it's not the smoothest but it's a good engine but it is good inside you don't notice it.

Anything the poor like/can afford but with a diesel engine carries a premium - any BMW, Audi or Mercedes basically. They want the "prestige" of a 10 year old BMW but think the dirty diesel will make it cheaper to run. My personal experience of a 3 year old S-Type diesel also suggests a 10 year old one would be a highly risky purchase.

Get something the sheep don't like and you can get a good car for your budget, although the suggestion to look for a petrol engine is a sound one. If you're looking at a 3/5 series in particular you'll most likely get an absolute stheap with a £2500 budget for a diesel.

It's broken.

HTH.

Seriously though, you'd get a spectacular S60 D5 for that. Get a Euro III with 163bhp and the 5 speed box. It's geared quite short, but the whole rev range is usable. Unlike the one mentioned above, it is an extremely smooth piece of engineering.

You could get a really mint late Alfa 156 2.4 jtd, or possibly a very rough Brera or 159.

Yes, but it will be the old-style one for your money.

Best off with an S60 D5 Euro 3 163bhp. Mine's just perfect for schlepping up and down the M1, haven't regretted it for a moment.

Be cautious if you want an auto as Volvo declared the box sealed for life so many didn't get their ATF changed. 5 speed manual's just fine tho'.

I recall this was the case with my C30 D3-Auto Geartronic. It also had electronic oil level, and I couldn't find a dipstick to check the oil colour. Lovely 5 cylinder engine though.

Got a £530 bill for the 3rd year service which involved not much more than fluids, so sold it pronto for something I could fiddle with and check myself.

"Derived from" being the important part here

Different engine in a cheaper brand pickup truck vs. Original engine manufacturer in more premium brand passenger vehicle in not as smooth shocker!!

This would be my choice too

The 185bhp engine is nice to have, and both the V70 and current XC70 had/have it, but the 163 will offer better mpg without a world ending drop in actual shove

For mostly motorway miles the manual would also be my choice, having had the 6spd manual and now 6spd auto Id never go back to the manual as it just suits the car, but it does blunt the performance slightly and affects the mpg appreciably. I wanted the auto and live with the disadvantages

Auto box should live as long as the car so long as there's no issues when you get it and perform the fluid changes Volvo should have specified themselves, 100k is a nice round number but I know some people do it more frequently. Mine's on 145k and I think has been done once as when I got it at 120k it felt like a new car.

I looked it up as I'd never heard of Volvo letting Ford use their engine design

The engine in the Ranger is a Ford Duratorq unit, nothing to do with Volvo, and having owned a Duratorq unit in the old Focus I'm not surprised bolting on another cylinder hasn't made it anything like the Volvo D5 biggrin
