Reversing on full lock this morning, pulling away from the garage I heard a very unpleasant grinding/knocking from the n/s front. Thought maybe the dip in the driveway had caused a tyre to rub against a chassis rail (it gets close on full lock) but it happened again on a flat road later on. Made me a little afraid to park!

There's nothing visibly loose, no noise while driving forward. Has anyone had this before? Any Ida's what it could be?

Are you sure the noise is coming from the front and not the back?

When reversing at full lock, the outer rear wheel is turning quicker than the inner rear wheel. If the diff has an internal problem, such grinding or knocking can be heard. It could also be the universal joints , prop or drive shaft. I'm not sure what such a noise your describing would be from the front though. Wheel bearing maybe?

Any wheel bearing play? Have you jacked the suspect corner up and had a damn good pull and spin of the wheel? Is there any wear on the tyre where it could be rubbing? Is the brake caliper securely attached or could a stone be trapped between disc and back dust cover?

Grinding noise on my wedge after 3 months into ownership was a broken front spring...
Driving it was fine! So it came a bit as a surprise. Also as I had checked before buying it.
Noise mainly present when the steering was at an angle.
Can't remember, as it is over 10 years ago, if it was present when reversing as well.

Hi James...When you say "Knocking" is it like one thump or more of a rotational type knocking/Grinding...Have you replaced the front suspension bushes at any point...ARB...Leading link...Drop link?

I would also check the N/S rear Hub nut with a proper bar, When mine was rattling loose i had a knock that i thought was from the front and that was turning right...Not reversing but still weight transference.

Since i have changed the leading link to chassis bushes which were the poly bush with the collar on instead of the original fitment of washers i get a knocking at the front end but the ride also feels a bit rattly and is noticeably different from the old firm feel setup..Something i need to still do....But yeah have a good look all over...Also is yours a PAS Wedge or manual?...Cheers...Ziga

Ah ah I have had this problem in the past and it was the drop links that were knackered but after replacing them I got another noise that only happened going over speed ramps or going over a crest at slow speeds and that was anti roll bar bushes so I would check those first.

Thanks for all the replies.

Suspension was rebuilt in August so I wasn't expecting any unexpected problems. It's definitely coming from the front - more a loud knocking noise, no obvious play in the bearing. I'm going to have a better look in daylight next weekend.

Maybe the Tas is saying "sell me"?

I'm sure that's 'not' what she's saying... Maybe just a little reminder "fix me & I will in turn give you back your grin" biggrin

Had a similar problem/noise years ago on my old 400SE which turned out to be seized rear drive shaft uj's.. Get her front up & check all joints, bushes, bearings etc..

Or maybe I consider how much £ I've poured in over the years and jump ship

Turned out to be a bit of a false alarm. Tyre occasionally rubs against the leading edge of the sill, where it wraps round into the wheel arch. Not happened in 19 yrs of ownership, and only occurs on an uneven road. Looking again at clearance on full lock, I'm surprised people can fit larger tyres on, I'm on 205s and it's very close.

But now another glitch has returned - the lying fuel gauge.

Hi James...Glad it was nothing serious...I remember that Delilah's N/S front used to rub on full lock with 205's on..Especially after i had the geo setup...I had to have the setup off a tad to rectify a wonky body...
The fuel gauge..Don't forget there is one sender for two tanks...Even on level ground you will have half of each..i:e 10 litres will show as 5...If you let the gauge go below the first quarter on level ground then you need to find a petrol station within 30 miles...Past that you run the risk of pulling any crud in the bottom of the tank through which is already getting stirred up by the low level....I had a funny one a few years back when i picked up Eero en route and brought him to a Wedgefest...We hit solid motorway traffic about 6 miles away from the fest...It was hot and nowhere to turn off...My gauge was reading under the first quarter and i was starting to panic ...I didn't want to turn her off as i had an issue with the hot start...We crawled along for about 3/4 hour and the gauge was showing 0...Finally there was a turn off a mile away from where we needed to so i took that and then had to sit in traffic to get into the garage...Im really sweating now and not just because it was bloody hot...Another 1/2 hour and we were next at the pump...I pull up gauge reading 0 still, I turn off the engine and the gauge magically goes up to half a tank..We were both laughing...I thought.."Touch i have a self filling Wedge"...I needed a new sender....smile

I've had a new sender a few years ago - probably long enough ago for it to fail again.

For a couple of years the gauge has run down to just below half and then stopped there - now it stops at 3/4 full. It was looking suspiciously economical until the truth dawned on me, luckily near a filling station that I just got to in time as it started to cough.
