We have just bought a house and have a large area that currently houses a sauna and what is basically a waiting room outside of it. I would like to add a steam room, as I use the steam room a lot at the gym, but I never really go in the sauna. The missus loves having a sauna, so a complete replacement is off the cards. My main concern is running costs. Does anyone have one? Or have any idea on how much they cost to run? How long do they take to get started up, as I know I couldn't have it running all the time? We have our builder coming over tomorrow to price up changing a few things in the sauna, I'd like to be forearmed if possible, as I literally know nothing about these things and google isn't really helping.

do you really want a dedicated steam room, and is your builder familiar with them?

You can get a decent shower enclosure with steam functions which would probably do fine for home use?

My missus has shown me a few of the shower enclosures with seats, but I am not convinced. The steam room doesn't need to be massive, max space would be 4 people. The builder has done a few steam rooms, I am going to go and speak to the neighbour this afternoon that has had one done. I'm just a bit wary of being ripped off but I appreciate that it's not a standard instal like a sauna, so I'm sure I'll have to pay a premium.

Not remembering which country your in now.

But a steam room is essentially a large wetroom with waterproof ceiling and steam generator hidden somewhere like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/281088462643?adgrou...

So not sure why it would be a massive premium.

if its going to cost circa £6k, then look at this:

wonder if they ship out.

I'm in Sweden.

I do like the look of that, but I want a proper tiled room with a glass door, preferably right next to the sauna.

So you essentially want a larger than average shower area completely tiled and are you looking for seating that is permanent (plastic horrible crap) or take your own stools in style seating.

Cant see why you can't just get them to do a Swedish shower area (if anything like Finland every bathroom is a wetroom), hide a steam generator in an accessible area, go get some glass off the local manufacturers and ask them to turn it into a door, closing the area off.

We have a large cellar and it already has a sauna in it and then a landing area which I could easily fit a purpose built steam room into. I want to have it as a proper room, not something tacked onto the shower room. I've just been out to speak with our new neighbour and it seems like it will be quite cheap as Long as we don't go nuts on the tiling.

Edit - I want the seats to be made into the wall of the room as tiles, not the crappy plastic tray type things. I say seat, I want a ledge that I would be able to lay down on if I was on my own.

At the risk of sounding a bit Council, can I enquire what is the difference between a sauna and a steam room? They're both rooms with steam in, aren't they?

Steam room is a wet heat, sauna is a dry heat.

I can sit in a steam room for an hour and have no issue, but 10 minutes in a sauna and I start to feel uncomfortable.

That maybe kind of correct for a sauna, but it depends on the heating method.

Smoke saunas I love.
Wood burning saunas I really enjoy.
Electric/IR saunas I can only put up with for 10 minutes max as its too dry, the water disappears instantly leaving hot dry air and not humid hot air.

All saunas in the UK (my gym included) I avoid at all costs as they are nasty.

The ones we have back in Finland I can use every single day (especially in Winter) without hassle... thought I like smoke saunas in Summer more than winter.

Of course it helps that our saunas are on the lakeside, so when too hot you fling yourself in the water, rinse and repeat several times.

I've got a steam room, that we had put into our new build house.
Fully tiled enclosure with a glass door. It takes about 3-4 minutes for the steam to get going, but maybe 10 minutes to get it up to 36-40 degrees where I like it.
It's gas powered, and has been fault free in the seven years we've been in the house.

Thanks for the feedback, Dave. Do you have a rough idea on how much it costs to run?

I've no idea on costs, we've got a swimming pool to heat as well, so the bills are biggish anyway. It's probably low pounds to use rather than pennies, but certainly not tens of pounds.
Mine is only a one person size so you don't need much steam to fill it up.

It might be a bit late now but as you like steam and your wife likes the sauna have you considered something like this?

Just a word of warning about steam rooms - you need someone or a company that knows exactly how to spec it correctly.

Most regular tanking materials are insufficient for high pressure or vapour. Anythg less may risk water making it past the substrate.

I think schlueter make a vapour certified membrane kerdi DS

Hi Dave

I am looking for someone competent to come and build a home steam room for me. Struggling to find any builder with any experience of it, so when I read your message I thought I would ask if you could recommend me a builder that can make home steam rooms

Thank You

BUMP

I'm in the process of fitting one in my house, tiling almost complete room is 1400x 1200, I've decided on a 9kw auto drain system, and large glass and door in middle.

Anyone have any pics/tips/issues?

Cheers
