Using an iPhone with iPod cable? Problems?

Guys, I bought an old 32gb iPhone to connect to my iPod cable to stream music, however unlike my iPod it comes up as unreadable? I don't know if this is a problem with this 2nd hand iPhone I've bought or if there is some issue with using an iPhone for this?

Does anyone else have experience of this? My car is a 2008 V8 Vantage

Reason I want to use the iPhone is so I can track the car if ever I want to, when it's left at a dealers or if stolen!

My iPhone 4S has worked fine with my previous MY2009 V8V and my current MY2014 V8VS.

Any car thief who goes to the trouble to steal a car that may have a tracker will have a gps jammer and a gprs jammer (both yours on ebay for less than £100 each) so a bit of optimism required that the thief who targets your car is dumber than average!
