1 baby
1 wife
1 who likes driving

Not botherd about mods but I like a little remap so I don't get bored.

Must be sanely economic. Give you a nice feeling when driving it

Can get shopping in

Must be fast and handle relatively well. And comfy. 5 seats, 4/5 doors.

Budget max £12500

In a similar situation, we recently bought a Mk3 Focus ST.

BMW i8

Perfect! It's good on fuel, which you want and it's got more than two seats, which you want. It's also pretty quick. This seems like a no brained to me.

For £12k? smile

With those requirements, I think you're largely limited to hot hatches and big fast saloon cars. Which of those gets least far from being a sports car is down to personal taste, I suppose. Personally I'd spend 5k on a good RX8 and the rest of the money on fuel. smile

Well put yours back in and try again hehe

As much as I love Jags, the V6 diesel XFs aren't very sporty. Like the 5 series, it handles well for its size but it needs tightening up to R form to be any use at all as an engaging family car. The diesel just ruins it in that respect and the power delivery is disappointing for an enthusiastic driver - like most modern diesels with electronic accelerator pedals, it's feels quite spritely from the off but if you try to drive enthusiastically you'll find it's blown its load in the first inch or so of pedal travel.

Coincidentally enough, I reviewed this a couple of weeks ago and only uploaded last night (not to sell - just a review of the model):

Not the quickest out there but still pretty shifty. Interior was very sporty however - lots of black and red!

Been looking at the 335i. No shouty spoilers should get past the wife's anti-fun radar. Must have 4 doors minimum though to get the baby in the back too so fits the bill.

Not sure there is such a thing as a "family sports car".

Is the M3 e90 not a sports car? Maybe the RS4. Most Subaru/evo's.

Sure there are more. Just need them within my price range and the right mixture of everything else.

No, not in my opinion. They're high performance cars, but not sports cars. There is a grey area around two seat cars with fixed roofs, and cars with 2+2 seating, but fast saloons like those are not in it.

E90 M3 if you can find one at that money!

Otherwise, the 335i Touring is a good shout.

Neither is a sports car. But the OP does not want a sports car. He wants a saloon / estate with decent handling, a bit of feedback and lots of poke. Handling and feedback requirements rule out Audis.

The suggestion of a diesel Golf made me cry.
