Having just bought an electric car (leaf) I'm wondering about how/if to change our electricity supply.

Can I get two meters installed - ie keep our normal meter for ordinary stuff and also get an economy 7 for the car charger?

I'm not convinced going to full economy 7 makes sense but If I could have both at the same time then that would seem the ideal way forward.

I was thinking in terms of a split at the service head, one path to our existing system and the new spur to an e7 meter and the charger.

It seems plausible from a practical/physical point of view but can I get it done?

What you want is physically possible, if your local DNO will extend the incoming service cable to include a second fuse. That is assuming you only have one at the moment and not a three phase head. Once they have done that, and issued an Meter Point Administration Number, you can speak to a supplier about getting a new meter fitted. Some will kick up a fuss about having two meters at the same address on different tariffs, as it kind of negates the point of the tariff in the first place. But assuming all is well thus far, you now need a spaky to come and wire in a new fuse board and from there the wiring kit to the Leaf gear. If you want the ability to charge the Leaf at anything other than the middle of the night, you'll need it on the 24 hour supply from the meter. The meter will then switch to the E7 tariff at night.

I doubt this would be cost effective though, so you might be better off with either just using it as is, or switching to E7 if you can make use of ~35% or more of you total usage at night.

This is the kind of things that smart meters are supposed to enable when they are properly implemented. Economy 7 savings overnight seem to be offset by day time rates so not necessarily worth it, I investigated this when I got a Zoe.

Fair enough smile

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure if it would be worth doing but thought it had to be worth asking.
