Here's one for you. November 2014 SLK350, 7000 miles.

Mainly used on shortish, local runs, 15 - 50 miles. Has been on a few long trips, no problems.

Back in August took it on run along the A14; in cruise at 70, gone about 40 miles when the engine seemed to 'load up' oddly. The fuel consumption rose massively as the trip range fell accordingly. Felt as if handbrake was soon, brakes were binding or it was a diesel going through a filter region, none of which was the case.

Stopped, turned off and restarted, Ok for a few minutes then started doing the same thing. Tried aircon on and off, no change. Fuel consumption over 20 miles or so was very low 20s.

Reached destination, car parked up for 4 or 5 hours. On home journey same thing occurred after a few miles then it cleared and ran normally after maybe 25 miles.

The day after, I took it for a 25 mile run, air con on going out, off coming back. Ran fine, averaged mid thirties each way. No difference A/C on or off.

Took it to dealer the next day, to be met with slack jaw and no answers, The technician agreed it sounded like a DPF regen, but of course couldn't be. The car was service in October and they checked everything but found nothing amiss, though there was a ECU update carried out.

All well till today when the wife has driven from home to Leicester, about 110 miles. 70 miles into the journey its doing it again.

Any ideas? I doubt that MB will be any use unless the car throws the issue up when its in there which is unlikely.

Edited to add. By the time wife reached destination the 'fault' has cleared itself. when it first started playing up the range was 326. It fell to 210 over about 10 miles but was back at 310 when she reached her destination. While it was playing up the instantaneous consumption was going up and down wildly even when cruising steadily.
