The OH was experiencing this on her 1 Series (reasonable enough as they'd been on the car for years) so she took it to the friendly local motoring chain that fit new wiper blades while you wait. A few weeks later and the new ones are making the same noise. Are they knackered already or can other things cause this?

Windscreen is probably dirty. Try a glass cleaner / polish.

My OH seems to be completely oblivious to this. Just drives along with them screeching if it stops raining!

Thanks, I'll try that. The OH's idea of washing the car is limited to leaving it out when it's raining!

This plus a quick spray of silicone on the wiper, wiping off any excess.

Rainex Water Repellant Windscreen Treatment works quite well.

My mother has a Volkswagen and the wipers screech every time they return. Cleaning the windscreen, changing the blades and even replacing the windscreen (it was cracked) have done nothing to stop this

You could try PIAA silicone blades.

Try a smear of Vaseline along the length of the blade

Honestly don't do this

Try grabbing them and twisting the blade a little.
