npower - Final bill left me in debt £990
Discussion
A couple of months back, i was looking at my npower account and it was showing i was just over £1000 in credit.
I thought this was a bit odd, so i called them and they confirmed this was correct. I asked if this could be paid back into my account and they said yes, all they needed were the meter readings so they could confirm the amount to be credited. I supplied the readings over the phone and they said call back in 5 days so they could calculate the amount that needed to be re-funded. After this the adviser changed the amount that i paid by direct debit as he said i was obviously paying too much!
When i call back 5 days later, the adviser on the phone said this would be processed and in my account in 3-5 days. Her words were ''This will be a nice bonus for xmas''
Anyway 5 days later there was noting in my account. I called to see what the issue was and they were now telling me that i was £990 in debt on my gas and electric combined.
What i want to know now is, were do i stand?
All the meter reading they have are correct. They said that it was a fault on their part that my account had not been billed correctly.
I did say that if i was using more energy than i was paying for, i would have been happy to up my payments. Due to their bad advise on faults im now left with a £990 debt!
I have now switched provider but still need to sort this out.
Any advise would be appreciated.

I've just moved and I asked N Power for a final bill. It came last week in a really thick envelope.
The first page said I was 400 quid in credit but then each subsequent page had a lower amount until on the last page it said I owed them 132 pounds.
Just give me the final amount ffs and don't get my hopes up.
The 2 years I have been with N Power has meant a bewildering amount of paper bills with strange amounts syphoned off my bank account.
I have no idea if I have been charged correctly.
Apparently they are renowned for the inability to bill correctly.

I had a very similar experience but with another supplier after I moved out of a tenanted property.
First time, they owed me money. Then I owed them money which turned out to be for a period after my tenancy had ended. This then turned in to a debt for different dates that I was in the property. The final bill seemed to be a figure plucked out of mid air for dates they'd made up.
Nobody could quite explain how they arrived at their figures, or how they'd got them wrong in the first place. I'd lost all confidence in them and their ability to provide me with a correct bill so refused to pay until someone could explain what had happened.
It ended in an agreement that they'd close the account with no payments/refunds.
I did ask if they would ever get in contact if it turned out i'd overpaid. Apparently they wouldn't. Sounds like PPI of the next generation to me!

Firstly, double check that you have actually changed supplier. Its unusual for a supplier to release your account whilst you owe them money.
Secondly, and given Npower's ability to make 2+2=26.5, I would go over your meter readings and bills yourself. A supplier can only back date your bill for 12 months from the point you first contest the bill, IIRC, so that may help out in your favour. Otherwise, there's no much more I can suggest.

It always amazes me how energy companies can cock up so badly with what should be simple maths.
We just moved and BG just randomly took £200 out of my account which bears no relation to the 'final bill' I received or the normal DD.
It's not the first time it's happened either.
They can bill me quarterly from now on, seems a safer way to do it even if you don't get a DD discount.

I had a similar situation with npower. Shower of incompetent ste, in my opinion. By the time they'd finished sending me bills for various amounts, I lost the will to argue with them and set up a payment plan. Each time they subsequently fked something up, I reduced the amount I paid. I'm down to a fiver a month now, and my final payment will be in 2026. I hope it costs them far more than that in administration. aholes.

I have done exactly the same, i owed them over 400, a figure they must of plucked from their aholes after giving me the bill 9 month later, they are getting a fiver a month until i have it paid off, shower of st.These muppets sent me a bill when they didn't supply me - that's how 'good' they are
But I don't think there is a perfect or even remotely good energy supplier.
We were with Scottish Power, they wouldn't accept meter reading but insisted on estimated bills that were obviously very much in their favour!
Ended up with the ombudsman - haven't anything about it in ages.
Changed suppliers to First Utility and they still haven't sorted out the plainly silly opening reading supplied by Scottish Power even though we supplied with them with a real opening reading.
Bunch of fking muppets the lot of them.

My partner was with Npower. Despite regular chasing and meter readings they didn't bill her for 3 years! When they did get their act together she invoked the 12month rule - 2years struck out, result Secondly, and given Npower's ability to make 2+2=26.5, I would go over your meter readings and bills yourself. I'm in a similar situation with Scottish Power following a house move in May.
The final bill keeps changing from £1200, to £700, to £900, to £600... I've given them the readings, and even worked it out myself that the final bill should be around £300 based on the readings, but in 7 months I've still not had a staright answer from them. I've raised 4 complaints, all of which have been closed without resolution or escalation, and now got the ombudsman involved.
I've moved to another supplier, and will deal with Scottish Power when they remove whichever finger from whichever orifice it is currently stuck in.

OP - Npower sent me a bill for c£1200 6 months after I'd left them. It took me about 5 letters and 3 hours on the phone trying to resolve their feckwittery.
Long story short - a couple of years ago they installed a new billing system. Lots of customers ended up being billed twice. If I were you I'd request copy bills and check them with a fine tooth comb before paying.

Currently with them. They are hopeless. And their bills are about as clear as mud. My account is currently 500 in credit. To be honest I daren't ask them to do anything with it because of st like above. The first page said I was 400 quid in credit but then each subsequent page had a lower amount until on the last page it said I owed them 132 pounds.

Check that you're paying for the correct number of digits on the meter - 4 or 5 digit meter. Sounds daft but I saved myself hundreds of pounds in only a few weeks because of this small (potential) oversight by my supplier.
The gas meter in my property actually rolled over and started again (this was when I'd just moved in, so didn't know). This sent npowers meter reading thing mental and I got a bill that wouldn't have looked out of place in a steel works. I rang up and asked if they really thought I'd used more gas than an industrial steel works in the space of 2 weeks. They tried to sort it, couldn't. In the end I went on to twitter and npowers little twitter presence were more than good when it came to it. Got it sorted right away.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
