I bought a brilliant little light for peanuts off eBay a few years ago, stuck a AA battery in it, worked ever since.

Father in law asked me to grab him one as he was impressed with the little thing so I found a deal for two from Hong Kong, ordered them, look the same (not from same seller) and they both don;t work with AA batteries.

Stuck them in a draw and thought nothing more of it (return costs would be silly) read something the other day about some LEDs running off 14500 batteries.

Just wondering if this is a common thing and worth buying some 14500 batteries (I have no idea why they would be different to a AA and the torches work) or is it likely the little asian fella who made both my torches had a bad day?

I can in mine, got some 14500s and when they're flat I stick in an AA, basically the same size battery.

They are Li-ion batteries and are 3.7v if I remember correctly.

You'll need a Li-Ion charger to complement them.

The torch will probably be brighter than yours but it may be cheaper to just buy a torch that takes AAs

About 0.5mm difference.

I think I am wondering if the light is designed to work on a 14500 and refuses to on a AA.

Does that sound likely?

If it's one of the "7W 1200LM Mini CREE Q5 LED Flashlight" then it should work on both, it's just brighter on the 14500.

As long as there's a contact, it "should" work on any battery, it'd just be dimmer or brighter depending on the voltage of the battery.
If it is one of the Cree Q5s, then you can test the switch by touching the spring against the inner body where the battery goes with the switch in the on position, and the torch should light.

That is the one. I have tried it with the button from my working one and the other button switched over. everything works except on the new torch.

Must be duffers.

An 'AA' battery is 1.5v - a brand new one can measure up to 1.6v.

A '14500' battery is 3.7v (can be up to 4.2v fully charged).

Is the torch likely to work on less than half it's rated voltage?

According to the Ebay auction under specifications:

"Battery: 1 * AA / 1 * 14500 3.6v Battery"

However - again - the 'AA' is *half* the voltage of a 14500 battery.

I have an older 300 lumen version of this cheap torch and it works on either. I use the 14500 battery in mine.

I tell you it works on AA, do I need to post a picture of it illuminating a tin of custard or something?

@OP, yeah, sounds like it's probably a duff one. Gotta expect some duff ones from China, biggrin

I wasn't disputing that an AA works in your torch at all.

I was merely pointing out the differences in voltages, and expressing surprise that a 1.5v cell will work in a device (apparently) intended to use a 3.7v battery.

It could well be that the torch the OP has may well work at 3.7v but not 1.5v, who knows?

So no need for the custard sarcasm.

At all.

Wasn't supposed to be sarcasm, just a joke.

OP has said that his torch is the same as the one I've got, so theoretically, it should work with an AA.

I reckon these will run on anything anyway, I was trying to find something with less than 1.3V to try, but don't have anything (does a battery even exist at less than 1.3V?), so I stuck two 14500s togethor (so that's ~6.2V) and it worked. Granted it might not work for long but it worked.

No problem thumbup

My guess is they have some kind of LED driver built in that must operate fine across a wide range of voltages, which would explain a lot.

I should buy one and have a fiddle with it just out of interest.

Yes, perfectly well. I have three and they work well on either, with varying degrees of brightness. The question is possibly the wrong way round - viz: is it likely to work on more than double its rated voltage?

Yes - rechargeable AA's are 1.2V , quite a few things wont work when used with rechargeables but are fine with normal batteries.
