steering probs
Discussion
Hiya guys, today I was driving and experienced a problems and was curious if any one ever had this. I went to work this morning and for the first time heard a slight knocking noise when I turned it full lock to the left or right. It soon went away, however I noticed that when I got to familiar corners I had to put more lock into the turns than normal. The steering didn’t feel as “tight” and it felt as if there was a delay when I turned the wheel. When I came home, the ESP warning came on saying it was off and was coming off the motorway, when I turned I felt as if the car was going to go straight on before it started to turn. The car settled down a bit later on and when I turned the engine on and off the ESP warning didn’t come on. Does anyone have any thought?
Cheers

I've had steering problems recently too. In the end I opted to replace my entire rack with a pedders quick rack however the symptoms that prompted that change were similar to yours. Steering didn't feel tight, knocking, car seemed to stray around a lot. It turned out that it was steering arms, one of them had worn out which is not a common problem but it does happen. You can buy steering arm direct from Vaux and Monkfish however they will tell you that they are staked and can be troublesome to remove which is true. This is why I went for the entire rack and killed two birds with one stone giving myself a quicker turning ratio at the same time.
Here is a photo of the steering arm attached to the rack, they should be greased up, tight and NOT moving around. As you can see mine was dirty, without grease and worn.
I've included this video too so you can see what it was doing, this bit of movement translated into about 2-3" of play at the steering wheel end so it felt like the car wasn't going to turn sometimes.
Video of worn arm
Whilst this may not be your problem I thought it best mentioning.

ive had it up on a ramp this morning and ive been told that the front of the car is fine however at the rear there is a lot of play in my hub assembly bush, so going to get a new one and see if that sorts it out, if not it will have to try a new steering rack
Ian - you might want to check the parts fitted and availability as yours is not std VXR8 set up - I have the full list of mods done when I had it from David who owned it and did the upgrades - did the following :"Upgraded Transmission with clutch packs
upgraded hubs, shafts from PATC in the states
Pedders rear bushes & G Force anti hop driveshaft"
Roger at MF might know more to help with parts

right think its sorted, i order a part from monkfish, it was a rear bush something or other (sorry not very mechanically minded) as there was a problem at the rear, and 2 bolts where loose with the steering rack, with the new part replaced at the back and the bolts tightened, she is back to her old self.
Talking of steering problems, checked mine today as I've had an intermittent wheel wobble and could hear a knocking when moving steering slightly, so up on the axle stands this morning and found o/s track rod end had some play in it and car is booked in for mot in 2 weeks so mad dash to the fish just made it in time, massive thanks to the fishy team for stocking all the essentials., changed both sides, no play, no wobble.
Just need to get tracking done now.
