“We’ve used it for everything you’d do with a Land Rover,”

Like tow another broken down Land Rover laugh

CKD (Completely Knocked Down) Land rovers have been shipped out of the UK since the late 1950's

and of course, who could forget the "Africar":

But yeah, other than those, it's a world first..........

Yes, that's what I thought...

Having seen one on the TV it looks as though the basic function is much like the old Citroen 2CV, famously developed with simple suspension to allow driving across fields without breaking eggs.

I wonder if you can get one with the driving seat in the middle??

£3million quid for a kit car truck made out of wood and an old ford transit? And another £3 mill to get it made? Wow.

It's going to have to be VERY cheap to sell in Africa I mean cheaper than a 20 year old Hilux.

Are Toyota still manufacturing the 20 year old Hilux?

Hhmm.. I like the idea, however things I'm not sure about..

1. TATA tried something similar in India with their Nano - cheap, basic transport for the masses - unfortunately the masses (like their Western counterparts) don't want to be seen in 'cheap and basic' - they want Audi's, Toyota's and BMW's!
2. lack of four-wheel drive as standard.
3. The transit engine will be a common-rail technological masterpiece - that'll be difficult to fix out in the bush.

I think his point was that you can't buy a brand new second hand one. Toyota only manufacture new new ones.

Mate of mine just spent 18months driving around Africa in an old LT35 converted to a camper, said he only missed 4 wheel drive once the whole time (Skeleton Coast Nambia, stopped to help someone and couldn't get out of the sand once they'd left :-) Otherwise he had no issue, despite what you see one the News, much of Africa has proper roads and even motorways, the dirt roads are fairly solid and level (if corrugated) so 2WD is no issue.

He said he saw plenty of 4WD vehicles that had been "kept going" by having various drive shafts moved, swapped and removed, plenty of 4,3 2 and 1WD Hilux's in Arica :-)

4WD is only for taking kids to school! Most of the Gucci SUVs are'nt much better than a normal car because they're running on the same road tyres and that's what limits grip.

A 2WD vehicle with appropriate wheels/tyres (and diff) can be very effective off road.

2 ton payload in a cab forward design the legth of focus? Forget the sodding africans I could do with one in london city!

1 ton transit is 5M with its stupid engine bonnet design and 2 tons puts you in a sprinter van so more like 6M. No-one makes a city (re parking bay) optimised van!
