The fact a third of women claim to have experienced this staggered me if true.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan...

I would never dream of hooting, cat-calling or anything along those lines simply because it's a scummy thing to do.

But a third of women suggests a lot of us must do this confused

I can't actually find a detailed breakdown of the survey through those links very easily but 1/3rd doesn't seem a high number. Not that any sexual harassment is acceptable but that depends on your definition.

Eg. If the average respondent had gone running 3 times a week for 5 years that's 780 runs. Even being the same route or at least area, think how many building sites and roadworks she's run past, how many cars and vans have driven past etc. And if "some form" of sexual harassment covers wolf whistles, cat calls or even leery looks at some point on one of those 780 runs then I'm amazed the figure isn't even higher.

Basically our builders, taxi drivers and van men really need to get their act together.

This would happen on nearly every run my partner did. Van drivers, builders, generally anyone of that ilk. Ranged from whistles to quite rude stuff to be fair.

Never under-estimate just how socially retarded the public are.

I have had girls in passing cars shout things at me as they were passing whilst out jogging.......does that count as being 'harassed'?

I just put it down to stupid teenagers having a 'larf'

No, but I have been harassed while washing the car, normally I get a "you can do mine next" or "you missed a bit".

This greatly upsets me. I feel the harasser has put no original thought into the comments he or she has forced upon me and the whole ordeal normally makes me sad for the state of humanity and how we as a species are quite spectacularly failing to deal with this menace of unfunny and demeaning Banter

The singular of "women" is "woman". That's probably the only observation needed.

My wife says this happens all the time, if she is not doing an early morning run. Worst time, she had to take refuge in a house on the route and wait for the Police. Some kind of armed response unit brought her home.

I have been running for yonks and have only been shouted at a couple of times.

Last time was a few years ago by a car full of motivational speakers. One shouted "run faster you lazy fking " as some kind of encouragement as they drove by.

Even now I remember it when I'm struggling, it should be on a t shirt or Pinterest or something.

I have ran with some pretty girls who seem to get lots of attention. Most hate it. When asked/told/demanded I should do something about it, I replied with I am brave but not stupid. smile

I'm a van driver, are you harassing me? maybe you should ask a van driver, builder, generally anyone of that ilk to help you post a gif.

Shouldn't you and your ilk be out harassing female joggers? hehe

I have run for many years and have had many comments.

"Run Forrest Run" has cropped up a few times. I have also had cat calls from women and even my bum pinched by two young ladies as I was stretching my hamstrings. That was a few years ago though, my pinchability factor is in desperate decline unfortunately.

Abuse is fairly common to be honest. I mostly tend to ignore it but we have our days don't we? If I really wasn't in a good mood I would simply turn around and jog in their direction - certainly gets their mind working even if my only intention is to run past them. Or if I have passed them then I simply stop straight away, start tieing my shoe laces and wait for them to catch up.

Just idiots showing off in front of their mates thats all.

I'd say easily 50% of who I consider my "fitter" friends have had this when running or cycling.

A couple of years ago there was one of those hashtag campaigns (which don't ever do much), namely #allwomen

I thought it was one of the better attempts to draw attention to this kind of thing as I often find myself saying "sure, but not all guys are like that- almost noone I know is, in fact!". Of course, with a population of 60M, it doesn't matter if all men are like that or not, that still leaves a massive army of dheads.

Just imagine if they ran in packs on the road and slowed the road tax paying motorist who also pays insurance and uses it for means to promote the economy and not because they want to use something designed for something else as their own private "track" because they are too tight fisted to go to a proper venue.

Then they would be in trouble.

Until they do that I am too busy harassing middle aged wannabees on two wheels who should actually be on a golf course and not slowing down me on my beer run on a Sunday morning !

I've just got back from a very long day of harassing people thank you but not just female joggers. Oh no, fat people, thin people, religious people, ginger people, people of every description you could possibly imagine. In fact my mouth is dry & my throat saw from all that whistling, hollering & all out general harassing. It's been a good day.
