Short story, but there is a twist.

Driving home this morning, I gat caught speeding at 116kph in an 80 zone. Bugger. 2 more points on the licence, but it wouldn't be too bad as my other 2 will be gone by next June. The Garda was extremly pleasent, we had a chat on the side of the road about his bike and generally got on.

As I was about to leave he asked if I had any other points? I do, 2. He then suggested to me that I should go to the tax office first thing in the morning and ask for them to be removed! What???

If you have points over a year old, you can have them removed by asking! Simple as that he said. Once I got in there early enough before my two new ones went on, the origional 2 would be removed, leaving me with the two new ones waiting to go on. Pay the new fine a few days later and hey presto, only 2 points on my licence!

Not so bad being caught now. Top bloke.

Hate to put a dampner on things but don't believe there is any facility in the Road Traffic Act, 2002 to remove points.

...a wind up perhaps?

Can't say unfortunatly. Got to the licence office and there was a 3 hour queue. Sod that. He seemed very genuine though.

Aw well, 4 points for 8 months ain't that bad.

I wouldnt believe anything thing from those c*nts !

I was told I wouldnt get points if I just payed an on-the-spot fine (following some minor protesting) and they arrived in the post about 2months later

Had to outrun them the last time to evade pointure

A collegue was chatting to a Garda at a party last week and that Garda said the very same thing. He said it is not done very often as not many people know about it. Curiouser and curiouser.

Commiserations! I can only hope that some friendly District Court Judge finds that there's some question over the legality of the speed limits wherever you were caught, as they did on the N11 on Friday.

Way things are going, we're going to need an Irish Pepipoo soon!

Saw one of the new Traffic Corps' finest leaning out of a car window in Letterkenny with a LTi 20-20, hand-held and at night. Parked on a roundabout.

WTF, we're getting as bad as the UK!

Only downside is if johnny foreigner meets a nice irish girl and settles down..... If he tries to get an irish licence in the future, the points will have been stacked up and waiting for him, to go onto his shiny new licence.

Hi All,

I am relatively new to the UK ........... from California.
2 years ago I got caught speeding doing 50 on a 40mph road.
Can anyone tell me how long before the 3 points get removed?

Many thanks,

Unique

I got caught en-route from Cork to Dublin in Durrow at 23.55 on a Sunday night, doing 81kmph in a 60kmph zone.

They clocked me entering the town but didn't pull me untill the far side after following me for a short stretch where on they were once again able to see that I was sticking to very close to the 100kmph limit.

Garda stopped me, was very nice, very pleasant, said nothing of points, nothing of a fine, just asked a few questions about where I was headed, asked me a few questions about VRT-ing the car etc and sent me on my way. I thought, Jesus, maybe they're not all bad and I've just run a cropper with a few.

But no,

Fixed penalty notice and two points arrived a week later.

81 in a 60 at 23.55 on a Sunday night. When I think about it I almost feel like making up a daring story as to how I got them besides that feeble truth.

Talk about a late update! Yes check the dates on my original post. The matter of the points and fine for the offense back in August '05 was only settled last month (forgot about this post!)!. After going into the office to see about the deletion of the points, I forgot to pay the damn fine . Letter comes, up in court in July '06! Non payment of speeding fine. Bugger.

Showed up in my finery, but no Garda. Put back to October '06.
Showed up in my finery, but no Garda again. Put back to March '07!
Showed up in my finery. Late.

Garda was present .

Phoned later to find out what I need to do next...... "do nothing" he sais! As he had missed the first two hearings, he had the judge stike out my case! RESULT! As I said. Top bloke .

So back to the 2 points from Feb '06. Great guys, the Gardaí, great great guys!

Ireland's road traffic statistics are pretty appalling compared to the UK. Maybe a little bit of tougher enforcement is required to bring some sanity to Irish roads.

I got "done" for speeding on the old main Dublin-Cork road - back in 1981. No points in those days but I had to attend a court in Abbeyleix (I thinkl) where I was given a £15 fine.
