Just tried to take up a layed up car policy for my VXR8 for which i had told them i had three at fault claims ,but before i could take up the claim, my wife who is a named driver on one of my cars was hit by a third party who had admitted liability, they now tell me this will make the quote more expensive, how can this be?

Because the numbers say it is so, unfortunately. Presumably their data shows people who have declared non fault claims (possibly in isolation or in combination with fault claims) have claimed more often (or more expensively or both) than those who haven’t. That will be all there is to it.

Adrian Flux are horrible to deal with.

I paid £thousands through them to insure two expensive cars whilst coming back from a ban.

They were generally awful in getting anything done, passing between teams etc. Then when I then had a small no fauly claim and the ban expired, they had a real "tough luck" attitude in helping me get it resolved and get back onto a normal insurance despite me being an valuable and long standing customer.

I went back to confused.com and saved a fortune off Adrian Flux's best price. Ended up with Budget Insurance, whoever they are.

Wouldn't touch Adrian Flux with a bargepole again. Their attitude stinks.

I wonder if this is a result of small or specialised insurers getting too big and beginning to take things for granted. I was looking to solve a problem to insure a car based at our boat on a marina where my daughter lived full time. Before successfully being solved by a small, local independent broker, I looked at various on line comparison sites and Flux kept coming up, they are clearly making enough to use ‘ bright young things’ to ensure a prime position in searches. To be fair, NFU and LV have lost their cheap yet cheerful status.

They seem to blow hot and cold in my experience.

Competitive in 2020 for my modified Z4M Coupe, greedy in 2021 so I went to Chris Knott who got greedy in 2022 so back to AF who got greedy in 2023 so back to CK.

I wish I could find a decent long-term option. banghead

Many, many years ago I owned a highly modified 309GTI.

At insurance renewal time, I wrote down a list of all of the modifications and went through that list with each insurance company I was getting quotes from. Adrian Flux we’re by far the cheapest.

Fast forward a couple of months and I got stopped by the Police for having no insurance. confused

This wasn’t a banking issue, as I’d paid for my annual car insurance in one lump sum. My car was towed away and impounded, I was issued with points for driving without insurance and I had a long walk home.

It turns out that Flux had cancelled my policy without telling me, due to my 309GTI being modified. It took a good couple of months to get a partial refund of my insurance cost back, and when I took my complaint to the insurance ombudsman, even though “all calls are recorded”, purely coincidentally, Flux had ‘lost’ the recording of my telephone conversation with them detailing all of the modifications my 309GTI had.

Flux is one company that I would never, ever use nor recommend.

I'm another one to wince when I see people liking and insuring with Flux. It's more the lack of consistency and fairness with them. I joke that they have a morning huddle and say: "Let's take some crack cocaine and see who can do the most fked up thing possible!"

Just their terms and conditions are eyewatering and I imagine not many people check them out before taking out cover. Most Insurers will say at worst, charge £50 to cancel and a proportionate refund. Flux seem to have it the other way with the Policyholder getting virtually nothing back. I'm fairly sure there are certain motor policies they offer that offer NO refund in the case of cancellation.

Used to be passable when I was driving imported vehicles, wouldn’t go near now - service has been circling the drain for a long time and they somehow seem to keep going.

56 with 8 years no claims and no convictions, good postcode. Best Flux could offer was twice what I’m paying with others. They were good 10 years ago but now seem to be too big and have stopped giving damn.

I went with them one year because they would cover 'agreed value' of my low mileage '86.
Anyway, comes to renewal time and they sent an email reminder with a massive hike in premium and within about 2 days (I don't check emails that regularly) they had 'auto renewed '. Fortunately I noticed this just before the insurance kicked in and immediately phoned and cancelled.
Seemed like a deliberate tactic to catch people out.

They don't auto-renew any more. They were OK on premiums for me for 3 years then this year it was 20% up, so i changed to LV. New premium is same as Flux last year. I moved, changed my address details, and was charged £70 - apparently their charge is £35 and the same for the insurance company itself. Just for 30 seconds work on a keyboard.

I was with AF from the mid 70's to a couple of years ago. I had loads of cars insured with them, from a V8 Cortina to a Conti GT with plenty of other hi-po Chevy & Jag' stuff in between.

As others have said, they eventually started taking the pee price wise and admin fee wise for a simple address change.
I'm no longer with them as I live overseas anyway now, so there's no loss on my part.
It's a shame though as they used to be really good.

There's no consistency with them. I had a car insured with them for £500. Moved address and they tried to bump it up to over £900. Got a quote elsewhere for under £500 which they then matched. So I stayed with them to save admin costs. At renewal they were cheaper than anyone else.

I also insured a van with them. £600 vs >£1k elsewhere. But when I sold the van less than 6 months later, due to admin charges I got just over £100 back (as I paid it in full). I suggest only going with them if you don't intend on making any midterm adjustments.

When it comes to claims there's inconsistencies with them too, though it depends who is handling the claim. I've had the misfortune of having two non-fault claims. One where the third party pulled out on me on a roundabout (communication great), and another where my car was damaged from debris in a hit and run (communication crap - having to chase for updates etc).

They do auto renew.... they've just auto renewed my insurance 6 days before it's due !!!!
I was about to ring them to tell them of a change in my job, they'll no doubt want to charge me an admin fee for that now.
It's only because they're cheap I use them

I'm the same I have used them to insure some of my highly modified cars as other insurers were thrown into a tizzy about them. Including some highly modified Japanese cars from many years ago, I would add I have never made a claim.

I’ve noticed my policies are set to auto renew by default now, fortunately it only took one message to AF to change it to not auto-renew after seeing my renewal quote, and so far only received one phone call after my policy had expired to enquire if they could do a better quote ( surely they should have known i had gone with someone else by then)

For balance I’ve been with Flux for the last 5 years and had no issues, though I’ve only had to make a windscreen claim.

They were by far the most reasonable price wise when I bought my GT86 which was my first RWD (this spooked a few other specialists). As I had modified the car and had a new notifiable health condition there weren’t many insurers in the market (list spacers as a modification along with upgraded brakes and watch the number of quotes on the comparison sites drop off!) so their quote coupled with their sponsorship in the BTCC made me give them a go. Since then subsequent modifications are just input on their portal thing and within a few hours you get emailed an updated policy schedule. I’ve not paid an admin fee for any of my modifications so far.

There has been a fair bit of Adrian Flux bashing on here recently mainly around pricing. Gouging at renewal is poor form though I think it is a reaction to customer behaviour, but a lot of the posters saying they’re uncompetitive at the initial quote stage seem to be trying to insure pretty normal unmodified cars with normal circumstances and then complaining they can’t match the bigger insurers.

My understanding of specialist insurance was it was for out of the ordinary cars (rare, import, modified) or those with colourful driving or health histories.
