Hi All, just after some opinions/thoughts per the title. My C63 went to Mercedes (it goes to main dealer as the car still has an extended warranty) last week for a service and complimentary health check which included a report on tyre condition. The report noted that the front tyres had 4 to 5mm across the majority of each but that the very inside edge was wearing a bit faster than the rest, suggesting tracking/geometry needs addressing and that the tyres will need to be kept an eye on.

Unrelated to this, the car was booked in for a wheel refurb this week for a little bit of curb rash on one wheel. Not long after I dropped the car off they call to say that I needed a pair of fronts because one tyre was down to the cords and sent a picture showing this on the inside edge of one. I was a little bit surprised to hear this given the car had been at Mercedes 3 days before that and it was missed (also annoyed I had missed it as I'm normally on top of stuff like this).

I agreed to have the fronts replaced with some Pilot Sport 4s and picked the car up earlier today. When looking at the tyres I noticed the date stamps are 1522 on the tyres meaning they are close to 2 years old already which I was surprised by as I would've thought they would be at least '23 stamped given it is now 2024. Is this something I should be irritated by/will the tyres be affected by the age at all?

Will you use them fast enough that they'll be changed by 12/04/2027? If so I wouldn't worry about it. If not I'd be going back.

Wouldn’t worry me.
I have read that some tyre manufacturers (Michelin I think) say new tyres can be up to 5 years past manufacture date.
The age issue as I understand it is primarily UV degradation. New tyres will have been stored in a warehouse away from the sun.

If they were rears they'd probably be done by the end of 2024... this was helpful though, thank you. I hadn't realised it was a 5 year window

Thank you, this is really useful to know. I'd never thought about it/researched it before but just thought it was worth an ask after I saw the date stamps

I have never had a new tyre fitted that was over 6 months old, but I guess some sizes have faster through-put. I personally think that is bad form by the dealer, irrespective of whether they were kept in storage before.

Really
It's quite common to get tyres over 12 month old

2 or 3 Gendarmes drove past us in the 5 mins or so we were stopped so the temptation disappear pretty quickly....

They are typically VERY common for exactly the reason if you search for "Rheims fly by" on YT you will find thousands!

Luckily for me the group I was with all had radios & there was always one at each end of the straight.

Nope, never. I’ve always used BlackCircles.

Never from my (trade) supplier either, invariably within 4 months of date stamp.
Interesting what you say about Black Circles. I had always assumed that they and their ilk were cheap because they were shifting 'old stock', Wetherspoons style. And nothing wrong with that as long as you go in with your eyes open.

Digression:

You say that (I used to also) but it is actually a myth, their pricing is because they buy so much I have been reliably informed.

Yeah black circles and similar have always been most recent stamps for me. Assume because they shift such a high quantity
