I am getting closer to the point where I attach the gearbox to the motor on my 4.5 Cerb. I have measured the clutch plate thickness at 17mm. With a new clutch being near 900 pound I was wondering if anyone can tell me how much life is left in the clutch I have? It wasn't slipping when it was running.

I saved this screen grab from FB a while ago to answer that question, ignore the wear rates they are referring to the plate in question from that post.



That’s from 5 years ago so no idea if he still offers the service but the measurements should still be good.

You may want to double check your measurements though wink

ClutchFix are great, I got a pair of discs relined a few months ago for £166, sadly a big rise from £113 in 2020

It's really handy to have a spare pair of friction discs ready swap, just in case

I would get the other surfaces skimmed if you can't remove the surface rust completely

If the clutch has slipped significantly in the past, you must get the diaphragm spring replaced, otherwise you'll regret it - ask me how I know

Back from ClutchFix, who would also be happy to refurb the rest of the clutch





Be sure to clean up the pins, and replace the star washers

I guess those numbers refer to the thickness of the friction material not the overall plate thickness. I will have to check that measurement when I am home next, and see if anywhere local can "re coat" the discs.

I'm not sure I'd ever let the discs wear as much as 1.1mm per side

That's nearly 4.5mm total, I wouldn't expect the diaphragm spring to be able to handle that

I’m just pulling the gearbox back out (oil leak) so as you recommended them was thinking of getting the clutch done while it was out, what kind of turn round time was it for you?

Great thanks, as long as it’s not a month or two!

It’s down to 6.45mm overall on the one that’s just drops out, one half is more worn than the other though so I’m sure it’s worth get done for that price & turn round time.

You were spot on, just under two weeks to get them back.

However one side seems to wear more than the other:




Both plates were the same with the bearing side (as labelled there) wearing more, it was noticeable how much closer the rivet heads were to the surface on the more worn side. So just checking over all thickness isn't the best thing to do. Obviously if the rivet heads do touch the metal surfaces then you're much more likely need a whole new unit....

I didn’t buy it, it’s out of the crashed green Cerb I bought last summer but it says Powers Performance on it so it can’t be original, the car had only done 39k so those wear rates are most likely on that cars second clutch. Although I guess it’s possible it had a new spring only a while back…
