Our sensible family car for the last few years has been an RR Sport, which I’ve really enjoyed.

I’m thinking of replacing it, and am trying to decide between a Bentayga W12 and a “proper” Range Rover. Both would be used.

Has anyone got any thoughts that they’d like to offer on which way to go?

It’ll be used for the longer trips; Kent-Newcastle most months, days out, holidays etc.

We’ve a little electric car for around town and some sports cars for fun, so this one is really for lugging the family and luggage around in fine style and comfort.

I wouldn’t want to buy a Bentayga new as they will depreciate quite badly, although Rangies do that too.

The new Rangie looks an amazing thing. Bentayga has an odd anti thing - people just don’t seem to like them but I think they have an amazing interior.

It’ll be a five or six year-old Bentley, or possibly slightly newer Range Rover.

I've been a passenger in both the outgoing Range Rover and a Bentayga (not the W12 though). I'd lean towards the Bentayga. That 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 is a beast, pushing out 600 ish horsepower? Plus, the interior is next-level luxury with top-notch materials and tech. Don't get me wrong, the Range Rover is a solid choice, but the Bentayga just oozes performance and far more rare than the RR.

A lot to be said for that choice, it just won’t be the newest version.

Bentley is a bit more special as a daily than a range so I vote a second hand one of those.

The Bentleys are actually quite a bit cheaper than I expected, I’d say a lot of car for the money but I bet the consumables and servicing etc are eye watering

I'd be going for the Bentayga - it's a Bentley after all, more exclusive and the connoisseurs choice. Everyone else defaults to the Range Rover!

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts, I’m going to try to have a look at a likely candidate in each tomorrow.

If you ever drive across a field don’t get stuck in the Bentley as everyone will take a picture. Vinnie Jones send out a vid of Lambo 4x4 getting stuck in his field and my mates Landie pulling it out. He “taxed” the driver £50 and gave it to charity.

Also take a good look at the V8d Bentayga they really suit the car & they're a lof less maintenance heavy than the W12.

Sit in a nicely specced Bentayga and you’ll be sold IMO. Bentley do interiors that only rolls Royce surpass . You’ve a choice of engines full fat w12 a v8 diesel and a v8 petrol with cylinder shut off tech when cruising

Didn't someone on these pages (DS Liverpool perhaps) go from a Bentayga to a Touareg? And wasn't disappointed IIRC.

Think I'd lean towards the RR personally even if the interior isn't quite as sumptuous.

depends on the budget - used could still mean the facelift Bentayga which is worlds apart from the first gen / original car.

That said i think the first gen cars are becoming a bargain. the 4.0d is the same as the SQ7 - experienced it in my previous Panamera and it was fantastic. If you're considering a W12 then theres no other real comparison, although perhaps the 4.0 V8 would be the sweet spot - and probably the one thats slightly easier to move on once you've put some miles on it (compared to a W12).

a Facelift Range Rover Autobiog (2018+) especially a LWB would be comparable. LR ownership and reliability on the whole is hit and miss so factor that in. 4.4 SDV8 or the 5.0 SC V8 would the one - in 'SV' Guise to properly rival a Bentaya.

I think the only thing that would bug me with the first gen Bentayga is the Infotainment. Depends how important it is to you but it strikes me as clunky and cumbersome with no up to date 'tech'.

When was the change?

I’ve been used to the rubbish 2015 RR Sport infotainment system, which is rubbish. I do like more modern stuff.

FWIW I tested a V8 and W12 Flying Spur before posting for the V8. Was nimbler turning into corners/bends and generally felt like a driving a smaller car compared to the W12
