M3 V8, Corolla Hybrid (2.0)
New'ish Q3 RS, any beater (<£10k)

I have a track car for pure thrills - so these two will be multi-purpose.

I have had that conversation a few times already .. "what about the MX-5?" .. "that's a track car!"

Seems to be 4. (M3/Corolla/Q3/shed)

Not sure what the OP's requirements or budget is, so hard to suggest anything.

If you need something practical and then something fun - how about a Superb 280 estate and a Suzuki Swift Sport (or a Yaris GR if budget allows)

Do you mean either a) M3 + Corolla OR b) RS Q3 plus a shed.

IMHO a fast compact SUV like an RS Q3 may well make sense for an only car as it does plenty of things to an above average level, but nothing outstanding.

The brief for what the car(s) need cover would be useful.

Also what is the track car? this will affect what you need out of the other.

In short a few gaps for the OP to fill in!

Yep - a fast compact but not an estate car*. One of the cars has to be a bit special/fun and the other is something you can park anywhere and not worry about. Budget around 50k. My track toy is a BBR MX-5 NC.

  • Never liked estate cars - but come to think of it something like a Skoda Estate and Yaris GR would cover all bases. I really like the RS Q3 Vorsprung hence mentioning a newer RS Q3 - guess i’m a sucker for their marketing.

Delete Your Account! biggrin

You can get the Superb (or Octavia) in hatchback form as well, of course, and both are styled to look saloons.

There's also the A5 hatchback and 4-series Gran-Coupe that are also saloon looking hatchbacks that will give you the practicality but not look like a family car.

As always test drive before you buy but in terms of driving experience an M3 and a Q3 are on different planets. Even an RS3 will be a better drive than a Q3 RS.

Reliability, though admittedly that Ferrari engine is special. I know BMW’s aren’t perfect but I think the their last two generations of engine are pretty solid.

I have a mk7 gti as my do it all car. It does everything and holds its value well.

I think you're saying you have the track toy sorted but want 2 Road cars? 1 compact and one that I'd just a bit of a donkey you can park anywhere? For the anywhere car what sort of distance are you talking and where are you thinking of parking? How low and ratty do you want to go?

For the other daily what sort of things is it going to need to do? Petrol? Auto? Fit a bike in the back? Economical? Fast...?

My track car is a clio, if I ever swapped the golf for a porsche for example, I figured I can get the bike in the back of the clio if needed! I guess 3 or more cars is something I hadn't properly thought about.

Yes, i have also looked at the Golf GTi and the Hyundai i30N. SW London is generally okay for car crime unless you have a Range Rover or ilk, but the occasional trek to less salubrious parts of London means i won't take the RS Q3 with me.

It's mostly 1-3 people and occasionally enough space to carry boxes, bike without wheels, tools .. no preference for manual / auto (i am stuck with CVT for hybrids). 40+ MPG would be nice - hence looking at Corolla Hybrid.

Cool. The m3 v8 would be on my list of cars I'd like to own so that's one pick from me. For the other one I guess I can't comment on the areas you visit but if I imagine rough areas and it getting dinged I would still imagine a 10k car is still a bit strong! There was a thread the other day on someone who tarted up a corsa C for next to nothing. Cheap economical and a doddle to work on I would think. Bangernomics could be what you're looking for like that and a bit of fun to boot! Hell you could get some kind of banger like that and turn it into a sleeper
