Hi I'll be in my second year of university next year and thinking of bringing my car.

What do I do about my insurance in terms of what address to put?

I obviously have breaks and stuff so the car comes home especially between may and September.

Do I have to change my address every time I come home, put my uni address down as my address, or keep my home address. Hypothetically surely it's irrelevant at this point what address as I put as if in the unlikely event anything to my car happened, my address would still be my home address (non uni) as that is my registered postal address.

Thanks

sherman

Are you in halls or private rent?
If private rent are you keeping the space whilst you are not tgere May-September i.e paying rent those months too?
If you get a summer/part time job will go home all of summer or just for a few weeks/days?

If you spend more time at the student place thats your main residence.

See the current news about Angela Rayner if your confused.

My daughter had a car in her final year. IrRc they wanted to know both addresses, and put an estimate of 50% at each address, plus because the address was within walking distance of college, told her she didn't need commuting.
If she'd put down our address only, she'd have needed commuting.

It’s a long time ago, but when I had a car at university I was coming home at weekends and in holidays so the car spent more time there. Direct Line were happy that I didn’t need to change address, but you’d still need confirmation from *your* insurers.

When I was at Uni, I used the home address as the policy address and advised them that I had the car at x address at Uni. The few Insurers I used back then weren't bothered.

No option to put two addresses

Your safest bet is to speak with your insurers rather than ask here. Different underwriters may have different policies on this (no pun intended)

This…just tell the insurer. My sons went up a few quid but if you don’t tell them there is a reason to turn down a claim.

This is a question to your insurer rather than here.

My sons said main address ie where you spend most of your time.

However a twist was the Cardiff council parking permit demanding proof of insurance on the car at that address…..which means we have his uni house as the main address now.

We left our daughters as the home address, as it was often here at weekends and of course all of the time beyond the academic year, so it really was 50/50, we just made sure it was ‘on street’.

Though when at Uni it could literally have been anywhere in a one mile radius and about 20 postcodes at night as there was no parking at the halls.

For my daughter , we changed the address to the uni. address for the academic year .
Incidentally , we were recently asked for the V5C by Bristol council to prove entitlement to a parking permit , but the V5C is in her home address .
Check to and from uni ( from "home ") is covered on your insurance.

Same for many people but the insurer wants to know where you live.
The insurer should be informed.

You need to contact your Insurer and put the question to them.
It isn’t that unusual to have the question asked of where is the car normally kept especially if different to your normal home address.

You'll have to ask an old person how to use a telephone.

My son got ‘slapped’ with a request for £500 extra, some months after the insurance inception, because the car spent more time away at university than at home.

I didn’t want to make waves for him as a young driver with an insurer. Otherwise i may have tried to argue the toss about how they word their questionnaire.

Anyway, if in doubt, clarify rather than chancing it.

When I was at Uni I lived away during the week and at home at weekends / holidays. My car lived in the underground car park at the flats during the week. I didn’t even think of telling the insurers.

Mind you, 30 years ago insurance companies weren’t a bunch of Monday grabbing s that would look for any and every way of getting out of a claim.

I think even 30 years ago not giving correct information would have probably been sufficient grounds to dismiss any claim perhaps ?

Might have changed but I never even informed them of which uni I went to, just ticked the student tab in the occupation and left it at that.

Not sure if the OPs still listening, but the insurance question is "where is the vehicle normally parked overnight?". If it is literally 50/50, I would go with the higher-risk location to be on the safe side and avoid any awkward questions.

But yes, I'd simply contact the insurer and ask them.
