As a matter of principle I believe that all points deductions should only be applied in the closed season.

I have no axe to grind as my club hasn't had any deductions lately, I just feel it's unfair to continue playing competitively with that sort of axe hanging over you. Even Man City should only have their eventual fine applied between seasons imho. I feel incredibly sorry for Forest and Everton (and Luton etc) who don't yet know their final situation and whether it is based on what they do in the final few weeks or the whim of the fools at the FA.

They should do away with points deductions and fines.
Automatic relegation for breaking the rules ,that would sort them out

So the teams who cheat should be given their advantage and teams who don’t should suffer? Interesting principle.

Regarding Manchester City, it's a Kangaroo court, with trumped up fake charges.

We are 100% innocent.

Justice will prevail, in fact we should be awarded ten points for the inconvenience of having to appoint barristers.

You may of course be right (you're not though 😉) but I'd argue that the ten points you'll be given (not) should be awarded in the summer.

Why the closed season? Do the deducted points then start from the next season?

It's not an ideal situation but the Premier League is trying to ensure that all points deductions should be resolved in the current season.

All I'm saying is that teams need to start the season with any deduction considered appropriate rather than being told with a few weeks left.

I would agree - if pts deduction is the punishment, get this campaign out of the way, apply the penalty in the summer and let that apply to the start of next season. Less uncertainty hanging over heads mid season then.

So you start on minus 10. Fair enough but if the hearing is in the middle of the season you don’t get any penalty until next season so still have it hanging over you.

So you can cheat, win the league/cup, qualify for CL, avoid relegation, keep all the prize money and it will just cost you 10 points the following season?

That'll definitely discourage clubs from breaking spending rules....

Yup! Ok, give the club the option - "want it now? Or next season?".

Why would it only cost 10 pts? And why would pts deduction be the only punishment?

Ask the OP, it's his thread.

The title of this thread is literally "points deductions" wobble

Just apply a multiplier of the overspend as a deduction from the next financial year, and if a club reaches a certain threshold then they receive an incoming transfer ban.

So,.e.g., £20m overspend means (say) £40m reduction from next permitted loss period and a £30m overspend means £60m reduction plus transfer ban.

Something like that means the clubs will have their chickens come home to roost, but also avoids this nonsense of positions being decided in court with relatively arbitrary points deductions resulting in individuals having the power to "play god" with relegations etc.

With respect, I wasn't commenting on the amount of points deducted (or any other penalty) but simply reflecting on the fact that these clubs have campaigned for 9 months only to have their goalposts moved with a month of the season left. Feels wrong to me...

Are you being deliberately obtuse? I asked you specifically about what you said in your post. You must be a politician.

Still not seeing how it’s fair on the teams who haven’t cheated to apply points deductions next year.

Citeh are so out of order that they should be obliged to play in Russia.

Or, even worse, Scotland.
