Rodin Cars introduces V10 as bonkers crate engine

Merlin's beard, will you just look at the thing? Hands up who's imagining it in a Monaro?

We’re suckers for a crate engine on PH. Honestly, who isn’t? Just the idea of one turning up (in an actual crate) for you to do with as you please is a tantalising prospect - especially when they are preposterously large. And terrific to look at. And sound like an old F1 car when fired up. On which note, welcome to the visual/audio feast that is the Rodin Cars RC.TEN V10 engine. Now available to order in crate form, in both naturally aspirated and twin-turbo configurations.

If you’ve been following the ongoing story of the Rodin FZERO, you’ll likely recall the monster engine used to power it. From the ground up, the car was intended to deliver the ‘ultimate track experience’ to wealthy buyers, and to do that it earned a purpose-built, mid-mounted hybrid V10 that developed nearly 1200hp. In a carbon fibre single-seater that made a gnat look paunchy. Back in December, we highlighted a short video that revealed what the engine sounded like. Which, though not stressed, was brain-meltingly good.

Now, for an undisclosed sum and like a guy ordering KFC on Deliveroo, you can buy one. Well, alright - it’s probably a bit more involved than that (there’s a contact form on Rodin’s site) but suffice it to say that ‘the RC.TEN is able to cater to a range of applications and customer preferences, making it an attractive choice for automotive enthusiasts and manufacturers seeking a versatile and high-performance engine.’ Which sounds nicely understated for a 4.0-litre unit that runs on synthetic 102 RON petrol and revs to 11,000rpm in its naturally aspirated configuration.

That, frankly, is the one we’d go for - a) because we’re traditionalists, but b) because its output is a semi-reasonable 720 imperial horsepower (and its 391lb ft of torque arrives at a spine-tingling 8,500rpm). But if you’re the sort of gunslinger that needs 11psi of boost pressure, then the twin-turbo derivative delivers 1013bhp at 9,200rpm, with 560lb ft of peak twist kicking in at 7,500rpm. Additionally, Rodin will supply you with a transmission too should you need one, which we assume is the eight-speed sequential ‘box it co-developed with Ricardo for the FZERO. Presumably that comes in its own, smaller crate. Somebody please order one and let us know.

Don’t know what it fits into or what it costs
But these are merely incidental facts….now added to my lottery list
I suspect that I will not be troubling their email inbox anytime soon, but nice to have a dream all the same

Unpopular opinion: yet another variation on last century's tech, which is mechanically still based on James Watts reciprocating steam engine of the 18th century and still stupidly inefficient. How boring.

Who pinched all the torque from the turbo, would have expected more than that?

The only thing boring here sunbeam is you, endlessly banging on about EVs. You meed to give it a rest.

Maybe go and polish your flip flops or even iron your hair shirt.

Probably a market from hillclimbers/sprinters who use similar high end engines from Judd/AER/etc or V8s made from 2x bike 4 cylinders.

Very pretty- but in the real world unless you are as rich as Jeff Bezos will you really want to rev the engine as high as 8500 to get 391 ft pounds of torque - and we all know it is torque that produces acceleration where BHP is relevant for a high top speed?

I stopped buying Ferraris a long time ago as a matter of principle after I was charged £2,500 for 2 head gaskets for an admittedly old V12 I was having re built

My latest Sunday toy arrives in 2 weeks- and the engine is a lovely lazy Yank V8- producing 500 ft pounds of torque at only 1600 revs

I was speaking to the Bodyshop owner when he was spraying my car- and he showed me 2 Ferrari wing mirrors for a normal Ferrari ( as opposed to a very rare or very old classic Ferrari)

The cost of just buying the 2 wing mirrors was more than the cost to me of buying and having shipped from the USA to the UK my entire engine and gearbox!

Sorry but I cannot get excited about cars that will cost a fortune to run

Clarkson was so right when he once said words to the effect that when you drive a Ferrari part of you is always terrified that it may have a mechanical issue that will cost you one or two kidneys

Nope. What accelerates anything is the ability to do work against a force, per unit of time. Everything boils down to power, even acceleration.

I assume you prefer yet another variation of the 200 year old A/C induction motors and hopelessly energy-sparse electrolyte batteries. How very modern of you.

Failing to come up with a way to counter my unpopular opinion or even discuss it, you decide to go for the ad hominem attack. Very mature.

fk me, he's back...on a thread about something he hates.

Have you done your flip flops?

Seeing as you detest ICE and you're looking to sell your classic ICE you've had for 30 years seeing as you now hate how polluting it is why don't you stay on the EV threads? Instead you come on a thread about an engine that's a work of art purely to tell anyone who's interested how poor it is....

This is fantastic.

If it can be made road-legal, Mr Pagani should immediately put it in his cars instead of the old and slow-revving amg biturbo v12!

Lottery win would be getting me an n/a setup for my s2000, and a twin turbo setup to put in something daft.

Like, an old volvo or something.
