, I remember a hybrid diesel Mercedes E class 300 drove from Goodwood UK to Tangier and back to Goodwood on a single tank and still had a bit left , over 1000 miles tank was over 80 litres though

That’s over 57mpg, impressive.

I’d theoretically get over 700 miles from my 3.0d CLS. I once saw a genuine 50 mpg after a run, but generally it comfortably does 42-44 on a mixed long-haul trip. Has an 80 litre tank which helps.

My guess is an A8 3.0tdi.

I've never done it, but my Octavia 1.9 diesel has shown 1000 miles left in the tank.

I have regularly and easily got over 700 miles from a tank.

Didn't JC do London to Edinburgh and Back on one tank of diesel in an Audi?

And AutoAlex did London? To Nurburgring and back on one tank of diesel.

I reckon I could get the 1000 miles out of my Octavia, but it would require a god 2 days of concentrated hypermiling to do it.

You could get the W221 Mercedes S class with a 4 cylinder diesel engine (though not in the UK) as the S250, they have a 90litre tank. That would be my choice for a range challenge. 1,000+ miles should be easy with that combination, 60mpg would give you 1,200 mile range.

Cars that have the highest mpg often have the smallest tanks.
One of those Skoda 3 cylinder diesel Fabia jobs with a Mercedes size tank would surely win?

and some with crap mpg have small tanks

My EVO V would do about 150 miles to a tank when pushing on.

And conversely, some US SUVs have massive 100+ litre tanks but do about 4mpg.

Good choice… I had a CLS SB with that engine… I saw 55mpg on a long run, and probably comparable weight-wise.

According to the data sheet the S250 combined consumption is 47 mpg.

My vote would be for a G30 520D Efficient Dynamics - incredible 72.4 mpg combined according to BMW

Recently drove down in patagonia and south argentina. There can be 400 miles between fuel stations so people squeeze as much as they can in their cars.

Saw one guy shaking his hilux after every click of the nozzle. I tried this and managed to get so much more in. Got 110miles before the needle moved off full in a 40L tank!

I had an E60 BMW 520d (great car) back in 2007 and that would regularly do 600 miles plus on a tank even when fully laden on European holiday jaunts.

Chopped in for a OG M2 lucky to see 200 from a tank now biggrin

Saw an indicated 1000 miles on a 2.0TDI (170) Passat that was a loaner from the lease company we used at work at the time.

I had been doing a 'CBA filling up' type drive on my 65 mile journey home so was on best behaviour. It was showing 72mpg when I put my first ever £100 fill into a car. Probably 2010ish. So big tank and good economy. Actually a remarkably pleasant car to use in its day. Probably a bit slow by modern standards.

My Alpina after three days on empty European motorway is showing 700km, which @68 litres is respectable.

I did 600 in an Audi BiTDi through Europe, although me and the dog have 200 mile bladders so we were doing superquick forest-based stops every 2-3 hours or so.

BMW 320d ED plus can manage over 1000 miles from its 57 litre tank if driven gently and you get lucky with the traffic.

Which executive car has the biggest tank? Combine that with a 2 litre petrol and a steady cruise should see over 1000 miles.
